Headlamp Unit Replacement

Help. I need to replace both headlamp units on my 2003 Avensis (electric headlamp leveling). I was changing bulbs and both plastic bulb holders broke. How are they removed and replaced? What screw/bolts need to be undone? If you have pics that would be a great help.

Many thanks.

Hello mate, the attachment I have included will explain everything, the bulb holders break due to heat and lots were done under warranty but unfortunately yours is out of the extended warranty period.

Regards Pete.

I've bought new units, but they don't come with headlamp leveling motors, which I'm assuming is a small black rectangular box (with an electrical connection) situated between the dipped and full beam bulbs. If anyone has replaced units before, is it just a case of unbolting the little box (there's a small hex nut) and refitting to the new units?

It took 2.5 hours to remove and replace both headlamp units and bumper. The fiddly bit is putting the bumper back as you have to fiddle with the bumper and a couple of bits of underside plastic at the same time to align it all then screw it back together. I've used Osram Night Breakers for dipped beam and so will see if they make any difference to the attrocious standard bulbs.

How did you get on with the Nightbreakers? tossing a coin at the mo whether or not to go with them or the philips extreme vision

The Nightbreakers are good. They are certainly brighter than ordinary bulbs, but I can't comment versus the Philips as I haven't tried the new versions. The Nightbreakers work for me around town, but I haven't tried them on an unlit road/motorway yet. Good luck in your choice.

I would like to join that question as i will need to replace my nearside lamp as well ( due to the same probolem of melting h7 hood). Anyone done this? I have mailed few sellers on eBay and all of the lamps come without a motor

Hi Gerault

Yes, undo the nut on the headlamp leveling motor on your headlamp unit. If I remember correctly, it's actually a captive bolt, so doesn't come fully out of the motor. Then turn the black plastic tab on the motor and prise up under the tab. The unit should then lift out of the headlamp assembly. Insert into the new unit and reverse the process. Hope that makes sense. Once you get the motor out you can see into the hole where the captive bolt screews into.
