2005 Rav4 Battery Drain

I have a 2005 Rav4 which runs well except for if you leave it for any small amount of time 10 to 15 minutes with the hazard lights on or the radio it appears to drain the Battery. This has happened quite a few times and I replaced the Battery with a new unit. Are there any common faults that could cause this? After a jump start it starts immediately and runs fine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hello

please check with alternator charging current DC. the other reason is if an acid is vapored -- it is the first indicator of short cut inside due to lead plate/s destroying. Cheers/Igor

A Battery in good condition should not drain that quickly. Remove the Battery, charge it completely, and then have it load-tested at a shop. It may be partially shorted. If it checks good attach an ammeter in series to check the current draw. Monitor the current whilst removing fuses one by one until the current drops. The last fuse removed would be the faulty circuit.

Another possibility is a faulty alternator. That can drain a Battery quickly.

I have this with mine. For instance the other week I blew the tyres up using a 12v compressor and it was flat after that. Some days it's fine but then the next it's flat. I've checked current drain but put it down to the little use and short journeys over the past year or so. I replaced a 2 year old Battery 6 months ago and still have this. The old Battery is in my shed and still reads 11.95V although it hasn't been touched since I removed it. The new Battery has an OK/charge indicator and even when it says OK it appears totally flat. It's on charge at the moment.

Check that your earth straps are ok - they corrode and can cause a strain on the Battery when trying to start the car.

As has been said a few times before, the Battery in the petrol version is woefully small and it doesn't take much to reduce its capacity for starting.
