Illuminated Gear Knob - Wiring Help

Recommended Posts

Posted

If i wanted to wire up an illuminated gear knob where would i wire the + & - to?

I would like it to come on with the sidelights like all the interior lighting.

I have heard you can connect to the 12v cigarette lighter? how is that achieved and will that not mean its on all the time?

Also i have heard you can connect it to the radio's wiring? pin 6 green and pin 4 brown?

All so vague so would like someone to clear this up for me :)

The 12V-connector is switched with the ignition, so that would'n be what you need.

Personally I'd use the wiring to the hazzard-switch, as I've done so for

my illuminated blower-knob and some gauges in someone elses car.

If you do so you need the green wire for positive and the white one for negative.

Or if you DO want to use the radio -connection (which is harder to reach) it's

the brown wire for ground and the mint-green one for positive.

Thanks jan i thought the hazard switch might be another option thanks!

Hazard switch is easiest as the wiring to that has just some tape around in, while the radio has these ribbes "hoses".

And the blower/heater illumination is a b*tch to reach compared to the others...

i asked the same question on a vw site....was told you'd need to add in a fuse? all started to sound complicated so i gave up on the idea. is that right?

I'm all for safety. But in this case you're adding a small load to an already fused circuit.

So IMHO it's no problem to splice into the existing wiring. If you put in loads that are

fed directly from the Battery and/or are quite heavy in themselves I WOULD fuse it.

In this case I think it's not worth the effort at all.
