Refurb Or Renew?

Hello, I have quote for refurbing my alloys at £50 per wheel. Now garage is saying if they are rusty and bubbling, the work won't last too long. I'd say they have bubbled and burst - big time, most of the spray is totally removed, but they aren't rusty. garage says if they are not rusty then it's worth doing. I'm panicking now. When I got the quote they had my car for MOT so they saw what they were like. I don't want to spend £300 and then have crappy wheels in 2 years time. Any advice? I love my car but have limited money to spend on her. Thanks

An easy question to answer..replace with after market Rims.

You need to look for Rims with a PCD of 5x100 and an Offset/ET of 35-40. If you post up whether they're 16" or 17", I'll try and find some for you.

Don't forget to notify your Ins. Co. of the change though :)

Brill, thank you, they are 16". Do I really have to notify insurer? I wouldn't have realised that was counted as a modification unless you had said, so thanks for that too. :)

Definitely, insurance companies claim fitting after market Rims increases the risk of theft.

I can't see any bargains on eBay at the moment but will carry on looking, be aware that Rims from a Golf MK3 and MK4 will also fit your Celica..if you want to have a look yourself (but remember the Offset/ET figures above).

HTH :)

The stock 16" & 17" wheels are prone to corroding. £50 a wheel is quite expensive as a lot of places will refurb wheels from £35 to £40 a wheel. They just need rubbing back, priming, colour & then a few good coats of laquer. However some refurb places powder coat the rims instead of spraying them.

If you get aftermarket wheels, you will need to notify your insurance & in most cases will increase your premium. If you gets your wheels refurbed, you will nto have to notify them.

You also need to take into account that you will need to get your tyres switched over if you are not buying the new rims with tyres fitted.

I've been on eBay for weeks - although I didn't know about the After Market or offset/ET rules. Glad to hear MK3/4 will fit, makes the options a bit bigger. Thanks again.

To SCARLETT ARROW I've been looking on eBay for weeks but didn't know about the offset/ET stuff. So thanks for that.

To ADVANCED CLUB MEMBER I'll find out what type of refurb whey are doing, is one better than another? Thanks for your input.

Powder coating is better and more hard wearing. However if you get them sprayed, regular cleaning & waxing will keep the brake dust toxins at bay.

Are they damaged (e.g. kerbed or deformed) or just corroded?

If it's just corroded, it might be worth checking out nearby industrial powder coating firms - Should be cheaper and won't affect insurance.

I used one in New Southgate called ERA Rodman and they shotblasted, powder-coated and lacquered all four wheels for something like £30 or £40 per wheel (I forget as it was a while ago!)

Was pretty good considering my local Mr T wanted £50 per wheel to paint them!

Hi am a painter wheels at trade cost 35 and up2 60 per wheel. I wouldn't powder coat any wheel. It flakes off when it damaged and looks shot that's y they are not powered to start with. If I do wheels. I let the tyres down and break the seal to allow the tyre to drop back off the rim charge 120 a set.
