Help Please. Vsc Lights, abs And Brake Warning Lights Again

I've had the new engine in 2 days now and have done approximately 100 miles. My wife had the car out today and guess what, the !Removed! check VSC, ABS and check brakes warning lights are all on again. It happenned as she was braking after start up moving onto and slowing down at a roundabout.

This has happenned on numerous occasions before the engine was fitted and there have been no patterns that would lead me to believe its one thing or another. The cars brakes are all fine, the fluid level is perfect, etc.

When the dealer checked the car with the code reader prior to the fitting of the engine, the only code he found was a "historical" code which indicated "p004"????.

There was no sign of anything else on the machine.

I,m going to take it back to them to check it out but i know that when the engine was fitted, the old EGR valve was used.

Is it possibly anything to do with the ECU needing clearing of the codes with them being present prior to the new engine fitting?

I know that the mechanic took the car for approximately a 45 minute drive with the diagnostics connected after fitting. Also, the car went through its MOT this morning and was on the brake testing rollers. The tester said that the rollers he was using were set up manually so as not to cause any damage. It seems unlikely that having the test done this morning and the lights coming on this afternoon would be connected as this has been going on now for about 6 months

Does anyone have any ideas/advice please?

No it indicates the EGR is stuck. Toyota will authorise a new EGR as part of the fix so just go back and ask them to sort it out.

Thanks Anchorman, TBH, i had a gut feeling that the EGR valve is the problem.

Will the fault show up on the diagnostic or is it one of these faults that leaves no trace?

I've been taking it easy with the engine as per Toyota instructions but it still doesnt feel right. Its hard to explain, the car doesnt pull away as smooth as it should? Feels a bit hesitant.

Chhers.

It should leave a P0400 fault code and it won't run right with it stuck open. They should have checked all that really but hopefully they will just go ahead and sort it if you speak to them.

Just back from MrT and they found the fault using the diagnostics. A faulty brake light switch, cant remember the code number but it indicated an open circuit on the switch. I,ve ordered a new one and should have it fitted next week. Thank goodness.

Thanks for the help.

Yeah, those warnings very often appear EGR related, but not always. My feeling is EGR throws up more codes, e.g. it will include things like "Check 4x4" and "Check Engine" too. The switch problem (and the likes of wheel-speed sensors) I feel is just "Check ABS" and "Check VSC" codes:

I'm confused ! I thought when a new engine is fitted the EGR was part of the package ? My engine has been done just this week as most of You know and the EGR was done with it.. Now My car has never thrown a fault code nor had the EGR ever had a problem while I have owned the car..

The EGR in My car was replaced around 12 months ago as it says so in the comprehensive history that came with the car. So it should have been just fine.... Yet the Dealer has replaced it again. I thought as above this was all part of the engine swap ????

No I don't think so. The dealer will assess a number of things including the condition of the EGR and inlet manifold. The injectors are not always done from what I can gather so the bill tends to range from about £6500 to £10000 depending what is done.

Well My car has had. Engine, EGR, Water pump, Injectors. and gawd only knows what else !! I was informed that the Air con was re gassed and that the coolant was replaced ...

A couple of other silly questions I failed to ask was what do I do about the engine number ?? And will the engine require an oil change soon to ensure any minor swarf particles are not allowed to circulate ??

I did ask about running in but was told to just drive it as normal.. But I wont rev it hard or allow the engine to labour.. Not that I do either of the above anyway ...

PS the oil is that clean You cant see it on the dipstick !!!!

Charlie, the service dept gave me this printout-

For the first 500 miles, do not tow.

For the first 600 miles-

1.Dont drive at excessive high speeds

2.Avoid sudden and severe accelerations

3.Dont drive continuosly in low gears

4.Dont drive at constant speed for long periods.

When i asked about the EGR valve being replaced, they said that they have to carry out a function test as part of their report to Toyota and mine was working fine. My injectors were replaced as i had a very heavy diesel knock when cold starting for approx 10 mins running. This knock was loudest at about 1800-2300rpm and when under load. The injectors were found to be out of spec? Regarding the quality of the work, so far so good. Fluid levels remain constant and there isnt a knock or squeak from the car and considering it is such a large job, i,m well chuffed.

Re the above instructions, I,ll be towing with the car in 2 weeks time and i,m off to "espania"on Monday, resulting in my brother "having" to take take the car and use it to put some miles on it.( He near took my arm off)

When it is run in, i,ll drive it the way i always drive, not severe but it doesnt potter around if you know what i mean. I have absolutely no intention of selling the car and i will definitely buy another RAV. I have had Audis and Vw,s in the past and tbh, i ask myself if either would have looked after me in the same circumstances as Toyota to the same level. I dont think so.

Fair play to Toyota.
