Hey everyone, the engine management light came on in my 1.6 2000 petrol avensis, got it plugged in and showed up as the oxygen sensor so i replaced it, which is located on the manifold just inside engine bay, but light still hasnt gone off, im wondering is there a second sensor along the exhaust system somewhere? i have noticed better power since i replaced it but seeing as the engine light hasnt gone off on dash is it fixed or not. any help atall would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There were two different 1.6 petrol engines manufactured for the avensis in the year 2000.

One without VVT-i with only one oxygen sensor, and one with VVT-i that featured two oxygen sensors.

If you have got the VVT-i, the second sensor is located behind the catalytic converter.

Its not vvt-i its only normal engine, the 4AFE engine. the make and model is avensis aura. i took look under the car and cant see any other sensors. Do you know if the light should go off after i just fit and plug in the new sensor? Thanks for the reply.

You could try disconnecting the Battery for five minutes before reconnecting,

to see if the fault code clears.

Hook it up once again, to see what the obd reader tells you.

I have a couple of ideas.

Is your sensor a genuine Denso for the correct type of engine?

The 4AFE camne in 2 versions leanburn and non leanburn. It is possible you have the wrong version.

The other idea is to use your self diagnostic which is built into all pre-vvti Avensis.

Go to your OBD socket which is located within the passenger fuse box. (It is behind the little storage box next to your right leg). Get a piece of wire and jump pins 4 and 13 - 4th from left upper row , 5th from left lower row).

Turn the key to ignition and the EML, ABS and SRS lights will flash. Look at the pattern of flashes for the EML. 2 flashes followed by 1 flash then repeated after break, mean the O2 sensor has a fault. That may confirm my first idea regarding the wrong type of sensor, or the replacement sensor is faulty!

If the EML flashes other numbers, then you have another issue.

Read my other posts regarding self diagnostics.

hi, ya i think the sensor is a genuine sensor, it came out of an avensis, its my second one cause the first one they sent me was wrong so i sent them the part number and this is what they sent back, as i said i have noticed a difference in power so i think the sensor is working cause when the sensor was gone it was drinkin petrol and down on power but now it pulls away nicely especially in low revs, ill what you said tommoro after work thanks very much for your help ill let you know how it goes.

after installing new sensor did you reset the engine management light? how did you got to know about the error code?if you used it OBDII then you need to reset the code after reinstalling it. Light will diappear suddenly, and then drive for 5 to 10 miles if the light comes on again then this mean there will be another error code or the sensor is wrong..thanks

Foxypa,

What you have said about the second sensor coming from another car tells me, it may have a faulty heater circuit - it is partially working. I had this when my sensor went faulty. The car had good economy and drove well. The sensor may be okay but is electrically different. If fits but does not work with your particular engine properly.

786innovation,

Foxypa has the non-vvti engine which is not OBD-II compliant. As I said before, the 4AFE and 7AFE have built in diagnostics unlike vvti which are OBD-II compliant, and need a scanner to get the codes.

Some scanners can work on the older Avensis, but not all.

You could buy a new sensor ( Eurocarparts sell genuine Denso sensors at fraction of the cost of Toyota). There is always a risk with secondhand sensors.

When you fit a new or good sensor, the EML light goes out immediately. You pull the fuse to clear the memory of stored faults and reset the ECUs.

You have covered most of what I said except a new sensor.
