Sorry to bring this back up,but i have the latest results of our fuel consumption.

Swmbo put more petrol in tonight and according my calcs again, she has got 21.34 mpg :eek:

So thats a big drop from last week where it was 28-29mpg.

So i think we will try the brim test.

Hi Paul,

It's a good idea to do the "brim test" for about a month or so (or for a few fill-ups) to get an accurate average. MPG will vary week to week depending upon what you are doing, length of journies, urban, motorway, etc. This time of year, the time of day at which you fill up will make a difference: in the cool mornings the fuel is denser & you will actually get a bit more into the tank than you will in mid-afternoon heat. You are clearly not getting a true picture at the moment based on the numbers that you've quoted, which just proves how important it is to check properly over a reasonable period of time.

I'd also suggest that you zero the MPG read-out on the stereo display each time you fill up during the test so that you can determine whether the digi read-out is accurate. If it is then you won't need to carry on the brim-to-brim measure ad nauseum.

Thanks Jim

We did do the fuel light indicator again. This time it came on just as swmbo was leaving work so was near the garage she uses which is a Shell garage and the price as come down 2p a litre

Is the trip computer accurate enough to give accurate read outs??

There seems to be some confliction about the trip puters??

But we will try the brim test for a month or two.

Get an Ultragauge and calibrate it properly, then you can forget about all the problems with the cars own built in units.

I have six digital readouts on view at all times.

Instant mpg..........You need to try and keep this reading above the Average mpg to improve economy

Average mpg..........You need keep this as high as possible and adjust your driving style accordingly

Engine rpm...........This is actually as near as damn it to what the Toyota rev counter says

Road Speed...........The Toyota speedo consistently reads about 15% fast

Fuel Remaining.......Much more informative than the Toyota fuel gauge

Engine temp..........You can see small fluctuation in coolant temp that don't show on the Toyota gauge

I chose those readouts to display from about 30 available ones, you also get an inbuilt fault code reader and re-setter.

I have no connection with them other than being a satisfied customer.

Phil

The one in our 02-reg is very accurate and agrees to manual calcs. The one in my 54-reg 3-dr tells massive porkies, being about 20% optimistic. So, yes, you need to check yours when you're doing the manual tests.

I checked the trip puter in the car earlier and it was saying the car had done 29.4mpg.

Swmbo did say though that when she got to the petrol station the fuel warning light went out just as she pulled in there, and the gauge rose back up??

So i think there may have still been some petrol in,just getting false readings??

hi

the fuel light will come on and go out several times, it depends on the angle of the car at the time . I'll come back from work and my gauge will be below the quarter say , and in the morning its come back over the quarter, once it's stood on the level.

I've never found the gauge particularly accurate below half and even less below a quarter. I dont tend to go more than about 50 miles or so on the last quarter.Although once i've figured the MPG out, there's usually more left than the guage indicated.

Still, i do prefer the old style analogue fuel guage than the wretched digital in my Iq,it just flashes when it's on the last sixth block, and you want to see the threads on that subject on the IQ forum.

At the moment I am only doing very short runs and this is giving me a low twenties figure in my auto which is,I suppose, not too bad  This is on my reckoning.

your fuel consumption really does sound about right for what its doing at the minute.the computer average is usually about 2 mpg better than what you're really doing.

once you get on a run , if you dont have a roof rack on and running are about 60-65 mph, i would have thought 34 mpg should be about the mark in the summer.winter on a run will drag it down to about 32mpg.mines currently doing 28-29 mpg purely on urban driving.

the rav 4.2 petrol is an utterly reliable motor, has no particular vices, and is really comfortable.

you look after it and it'll look after you

and dont whatever you do, go for a landrover, unless you like coffee drinking at landrover dealers while you wait for your LR to be repaired for the umpteenth time

Hello all,

Just quickly as im still looking for a winter car, are the above figures about correct for the mpg on a 4.2 5 door (im aware of external influences but in general...)

Thanks
