I have a 2006 rav 4 xt4 auto petrol . For a few months now i have had a knocking noise coming from what seems like the steering column , it is only making the noise which you can also feel through the wheel when either reversing slowly or going forward slowly and turning the wheel. It has gradually been getting worse over the last couple of weeks.

Any help much appreciated

It may be the steering intermediate shaft. Toyota issued a TSB for this problem and had been repairing this under warranty. A search found these relevant threads:

I've done one. Its not a bad job off ramps but you'd be struggling without. Don't move the steering wheel with the joint off as the spiral cable must be correctly positioned.

It costs £277 inc labour at a dealer so price one off Kingo and save a packet. You will also need a stainless steel clip for the rubber boot which costs about a fiver.

Amy chance of a how to or a pic ? When You say ramps are We talking drive up ones on the drive outside the house or ramps at a workshop or garage..

I sometimes get a clicking type noise that I can feel rather than hear.. It was there when the car was MOTd a couple of moths ago and no problem.. It aint got any worse and I was thinking it sounded like a dry joint or something along those lines..

Wee Charlie.
