Toyota Yaris

Hello everyone. I have a toyota 2008 yaris with 81,000 miles on it. It just starting making a whining/whistle noise that I can hear more so with the windows up. It's hard to tell which side of the car its coming from but definately underneath. When I accelerate the noise increases, I think its because of the increasing speed. when steady at a certin MPH, it will whistle. At that steady speed, I will downshift to 3rd and the whistling sound will not increase and the pitch of the sound will stay the same. this tells me it's not something internal of the transmission. If it was the sound would increase to a higher pitch sound when downshifting to 3rd. This is an automatic. I ws kinda of leaning more towards a bearing in the wheels. Any Ideas what this could be? Has anyone else had this issue with the 08 yaris or for any yaris for that matter. I took to a shop and they said everything seems fine, test drove it and they told me it was just the characteristics of a small car but i'm still not satisfied. Another point I wanted to mention, when I press the throttle lightly back and forth to the point of where the car is just coasting and acceleratiing, I can almost hear like a grinding noise. the whistle noise turns more into a grinding noise when I lightyly press the trottle and let off. I hope someone can help me. Ultimately I will have to take to another shop to get a second opinion. I was thinking it was more of the wheel bearing. not sure though....any help would be greatly appreciated.

I wonder if it's the ancillaries belt?

Mine makes this nasty high-pitched screeching squealing sound when I fire it up in winter, although it goes away quite quickly once the car warms up.

May also be brake squeal; I've noticed mine make a squealy sound when they get too hot due to over use, but could also be because a small stone or something has gotten trapped in there?

I have a 2008 Yaris and I too have noticed a faint whistly noise at times, usually cruising at speed.

It also has a bit of belt squeal in colder months, but that isn't the noise in question. What I put it down to is the aircon pulley bearings when the aircon is not being used. Last time I used the aircon I didn't previously notice the noise but next time I drive it, I will listen out for it & report back. From living memory, this car has always had this noise.

What engine do you have skowdg? Mine is the 1.3 with 31,800 on the clock

  • 2 weeks later...

Mine is the 1.3 litre hatch back. I really love this car but hate that annoying noise. I'm pretty positive that this car didnt have this noise when I 1st bought it and it gradually came on. I have 82,000 on it now.

You may have a stone caught between the brake shield and disk.. That would account for the noise when pushing down on the throttle.

Easy to check. jack up car, remove wheel, inspect disk.

just wondering if it has anything to do with the CV joints or the inner CV joints
