Avensis Lost All Drive

Hello just bought a car Avensis D4D GS 2Ltr X Reg Diesel

Symptoms, about three times since I've owned it it seemed like i missed a gear when changing gear redid gear change and the problem seemed to be gone.

Today driving again same problem but the car has lost all drive it just about moves at idling speed (Jerky not smooth) all the gears seem to work OK including limping in reverse.

There are no weird noises no vibration nothing to suggest anything is wrong.

The clutch just seems to have failed immediately although as i say i have had 3 similar events. I have tried it since but sadly the drive hasn't come back.

Any expert opinions of what has happened/gone wrong

Thanks for your time

Hi mate, it could be a problem with the dual mass flywheel/clutch assembly or maybe a drive shaft fault either way you probably need a local garage to give you an opinion.

Regards ..... Pete.

Hi Pete thanks for your reply.

I have asked a couple of garages using MY diagnosis they expected vibration/noise with a dual mass damper.

Can you say for certain that it has a dual mass damper ?

The car is totally un-drivable so getting expert help is difficult and it is about 3 miles away from where i live.

Thanks

Before you go running and get it repaired, Let me ask you afew more questions!

When the car is cold,

Start it and open the bonnet and head towards the engine bay.

1 - Look at the engine, does it wobble back and forward alot?

When I reffering to wobbling, it will be shaking the car back and foward with vibrations.

2 - As your standing towards looking into the engine bay, stand next to the Battery, and listen around that area.

(under the Battery is the gearbox and flywheel) can you hear a knock or rattle noise. (get someone to rev the car and hold

at 2k reves and listen to changes)

3 -

With the hood closed, and the windows open. Hand brake all the way up (as far as you can) put the car in 2nd gear and lift the clutch up

(dont rev the car whilst doing this). Any knocks or rattles? if you lift the clutch up all the way does it stall, or want to move forward

4 -

Where is the biting point, towards the bottom, or top of the pedal. Is the pedal hard to press can you hear a squishing noise, ie air being compressed?

5 -

With the car reving at 2.5k lift the clutch, does it lurch forward, or wobble. Does engine maintain speed but not gain speed.

good luck!

cmia thanks for your help. Only just stopped raining. :ffs:

Nothing, all seems fine

2 - As your standing towards looking into the engine bay, stand next to the battery, and listen around that area.

No change

(dont rev the car whilst doing this). Any knocks or rattles? if you lift the clutch up all the way does it stall, or want to move forward

No knocks or rattles, i can lift the clutch all the way up no drop in revs just an intermittent grab

4 -

Where is the biting point, towards the bottom, or top of the pedal. Is the pedal hard to press can you hear a squishing noise, ie air being compressed?

The biting point is about one third of the way up no change in the feel to when it was working OK

With the car reving at 2.5k lift the clutch, does it lurch forward, or wobble. Does engine maintain speed but not gain speed.

No change in engine speed when lifting the clutch no lurching just an intermittent grabbing.

Thanks for pointing out my spelling mistakes.

Well said cmia, I can't believe the oldgeezer would make such a comment!

I agree 100% as you don't need to be the worlds best at spelling to know about cars .... and you do know about Toyota vehicles, so keep the help coming mate!

Oh dear, but you did know EXACTLY what part I was referring to but my spelling was wrong.

My point is everyone makes mistakes but people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

I hoped that the smilies would get across my light hearted humour, obviously you have had a bypass
