Well collected my daughters iq today from local toyota dealer, they done the intermediate service and first m.o.t, they replaced the passenger window rubber and the chap said they had also replaced the manifold for the EGR , had a look and they did, thought I was going to have to argue over this as just lied and said it was sluggish sometimes pulling away and they said they would have a look. Did not think for one minute all work would be done today thought I may have to take it back but everything done and just service and m.o.t to pay for £151.00.

Did however have to refit a screw and plastic cap which they left in footwell which came from door panel but otherwise excellent. Does seem a bit more go in it as well. Done 29k miles.

Well pleased. Thanks for everyone's help on here and the T.S.B info.

I have had no problems at all with my IQ since the new EGR and associated parts were fitted, it drives much better than before ! More power / better acceleration / no hesitation at all when starting off / better MPG, I'm now averaging 70 MPG so I am very happy with the modification.

  • 6 months later...

My 2010 is starting to act up ("coughing" during startup, low torque on lower revs), but the dealer refuses to do anything with it as long as it doesn't throw codes.

I got the 5 years extended warranty, but in the light of the current circumstanses this seems to have extremely limited value.

Inspired by the other people in this thread (BIG THANKS TO YOU GUYS!) I just wrote a letter to the national toyota office pointing out the SBN and that it is a potential safety issue, hoping that they value customers more than my local dealership.

Wish me luck...

Hairy .. you can point out... "what will happen if there is an accident due to this (like on a roundabout) ... and then the liability [lawsuit] will be looking in your [Toyota's] direction"...

With my discussion with T it seemed that this made a bend in their thinking... money... oops...

Thank you - the letter is already on its way.

I pointed out that I have to enter the highway at an uphill onramp with children in the car daily, so a sudden loss of power could easily lead to life threatening situations.

Should they deny my claim, I will save their answer for later. That way I will have documentation on contacting T about the issue in the warranty period without them taking action.

So when the EGR eventually clogges up completely, I can demand all parts affected by excessive carbon buildup to be changed (New head, machining of bottom end / cleaned or new pistons, new intake, all sensors in intake and exhaust ++)

Hoping for the "quick fix" though..

Yes and no..

I hope this claim works... but tell them what you will do when they do not comply... So "should they deny etc.." tell them this.

About the EGR clogging.. this is not in the warranty...alas... Look at the papers..it says the engine... so not the parts before the engine nor after the engine.. thus..air-intake or exhaust... not in warranty...

Maybe within the first 3 years.. but not in the extended 2 years... :-(

Also a clogged EGR intake does not do that kind of damage... power is lost.....that's it... no real damaged or broken things...

A wrong mixture caused by incorrect EGR readings can indeed lead to premature carbon build up, which again can cause pinging/detonation when burning off.

If pinging is detected, complete teardown and rebalancing is in order.

I'm talking absolute worst case scenario though.

Also I fear you are right about the "what is engine" part :(

I'll update this when I know more.

After experiencing issues with hesitation and lack of power, I took my 2010 IQ 1.0 in. I already knew how to check the EGR pipe and that I had the old type one.

Paid them to change the spark plugs (£80) and they also checked the issue i reported, then decided that they will fix the lack of speed issue as per the known TSB.

All now changed (apparently it would cost £1500 if out of warranty!!!) and the car feels like it would fly. Massive difference.

Well, I better start hoping she will start stopping on me soon..

It will be covered by the 5 year guarantee, but not untill the workshop can confirm the issue by their diagnosis system.

It currently reads just fine, so it will not be touched in its current state (shaking on lower rpms and difficulties on startup).

At least I can keep it for another year and a half without fearing (economical) meltdown, but there is no way that I'm keeping her past the warranty period

Just to add to my experience:

- car feels 10 times better

- they did not ask for service history when doing the work, however a few days later I had a call from them saying they cannot bill Head Office without me proving the car has FSH. Luckily I had the printout from Black Horse so I sent them that (no service book). Not heard back since.

I just told a small lie, I booked my daughters iq in for a service and said that she said on a couple of occasions she has pulled out of a junction stuck her foot down and struggled to pull away quickly, and that I have driven it and can't get it to do it. I mentioned the issues I had read with the EGR problem and they said they would have a look when they do the basic service. Picked it up and they had replaced the manifold, cat, all free of charge result, no questions asked. Just get it done before 5 years up.

Great ... good that is has been done ... cause it really is(was) a faulty design...

My EGR and catalyst has been changed last year... car is totally different..

But...

When I stop the engine (+turn it off) at a traffic-light for some minutes (yes we have those lights :-( )... after starting it up again, the car will pull away very slowly and has some power loss / you really have to step on the accelerator... :-/ htis for maybe a 1/2 a minute... then it's over.

Save me guys, save me!

Could anyone that have gotten this issue sorted BEFORE the engine gave error-codes please share with me their VIN-number and country?

My dealer was not convinced that any had been changed unless stated defect (error-code), so giving them specific examples could strenghten my case considerably.

It would really make my day if anyone would bother - thanks a lot.

Toyota have a bulletin associated with this problem so they are aware of it

Not sure if we are allowed to quote the exact TSB no (mods, please delete if that is not the case).

It is IQ: Technical Service Bulletin 17 Aug 2011 EG-0064T-0811-T-EN-IR.

They have the TSB number and have confirmed this, but they are saying that only cars that have this problem confirmed (by error codes) will be fixed free of charge.

Their aftersales manager told me that if I wanted to worry about the safety aspect of this issue, I might as well worry about the wheels falling off..

Not very impressed with their customer treatment so far.

Also, today I got a recall note. For the power steering.. :disgust:

I agree

I was one of the first with this problem and have a good relationship with my local dealer. My car would pull onto a busy roundabout and almost stop many times absolutely terrifying!!!! There were NO fault codes relating to it. Basically it's an expensive replacement and they will try to fob you off

Take a look at Bob Neal's letter he sent to Toyoya UK relating to safety and has the bulletin number on it. It's a first class letter to get off to Toyota UK

Thanks again all, really appreciate the feedback.

I actually pretty much copied that letter the last time, but will try again this weekend.

Will include the TSB so at least they can't sell me that error code BS again...
