2006 2Ltr D4D

Hi All,

Wonder if you guys can shed any light on a small problem with my Avensis 2ltr D4D 2006!

when it is cold ie 1st start of the day it seems very sluggish for the 1st mile or so similar to poor Turbo boost, although the turbo can be heard whistling up, then the car suddenly goes like the clappers bags of torque and smooth as silk.

Also when its got right up to temp (approx 10mls) and I stop at say a junction, when I pull away it is very crackly until it reaches 2k revs then its off like a rocket again,I cleaned the EGR Valve when I bought the car a few months ago as it was constantly sluggish, the EGR was virtually clogged with carbon this made a terrific difference :yahoo: .

I then serviced the car replacing the air/fuel/oil filters and also replaced the gearbox oil with the correct Toyota supplied oil as this car has the 6 speed box. I cleaned the Maff sensor and checked for air leaks in the induction/turbo pipes, all to no avail.

If it was a petrol I would be saying that the ignition timing is too far retarded when cold and too advanced when hot, but obviously this is a Diesel, I havn't completely ruled out the MAF just cleaned it, also I might add there is no black smoke at all even when revved pretty hard and the temp is stable, has anyone any ideas or pointers??. or can anyone tell me if this model is very sluggish cold and does clatter when fully up to temp, my wifes Avensis is a 2004 D4D and does'nt exhibit this problem and hers has now done 160k trouble free. mine has covered 95k.

Sorry for the long winded post and thanks for any replies :!Removed!: .

As long as you have not used a cheap oil filter,

you can disconnect the MAF and drive it to see if it makes a diffrence.

Otherwise the clattering is probably one of the injectors sticking.

Hi thanks for the reply,

No I dont use cheap filters, also if I run it with the MAF disconnected will it throw up an engine management light? also has anyone tried any good cleaners to cure sticking injectors?.

If you disconnect the MAF, engine check light should come on. (thats normal) preset ecu values will be used.

As for the sticky injector, you will probably have to remove and refurb.

Alot of the guys recommend

BG244 Professional Grade Diesel Injector & Engine cleaner.

Give that ago.

good luck,

Also a Warning.

If you do remove the injectors, you need to mark them to the cylinder as they are coded to the ECU.

If you dont, you could be in for more trouble!
