Winter Driving?

Just for clarity. M+S mean mud and snow but this is nothing to do with the compound of the tyre. For example the Yokohama g91 is m+s however is an all weather tyre. You need the snowflake symbol for it to be a winter tyre which has the different tyre compound. Funnily enough some summer tyres also say m+s!

The m+s allocation is purely based on the tread of the tyre. I don't have the stats to hand however a tyre gets m+s designation when it has X amount of cross tread. A michalin Eco tyre for example has very little cross tread making it great for fuel economy but has no bite when things get slippy.

To answer the first question: we have a 4.3 so cant answer for the 4.2 but for what it's worth, the rav is stupendously excellent in the snow. bluevortex has a great video of him driving his ex-t180 in the snow and it doesn't miss a beat. I can also say that our was awesome during the 6 weeks of White stuff up here in scotlandshire!!

In terms of how to drive, it does feel different because if the car slides you don't loose control the same way as in a 2 wheel drive because all the wheels are turning. I had a lot of fun actually making it go sidey-ways and still being totally in control. It also helps that the vsc works it's ***** off at keeping you going forwards. very disconcerting when it tweaks your breaks individually all by itself!!

Again i don't you 4x4 system but the 4.3 is a 60:40 front:back spilt and steps it down when not required. Pressing the diff lock button initiates an electronic lock (not mechanical) which means the wheels can spin. Otherwise the vsc seeks to stop the spinning (you might want this in mud or snow if youre actually stuck) thus transferring more power to the other wheels.... This is my understanding. I wait to be stand corrected.. Although anchs had a brilliant PDF thingy detailing it all. There might be one for yer motor too!!

Have fun, be safe and we look forward to hearing how you get on when the White stuff comes again!!!

(sorry for waffling. Not proof read as not easy on iPhone so apologies If there are any typos!!!) :)

Thanks for your reply Dave

All i know is that the 4.2 we have is permanent four wheel drive, and the tyres we have had fitted, although a budget tyre do have the M+S symbols on them.

I thought you said you were in Bromsgrove??

Must admit i enjoy watching the golf on the box.

Only tried it once meself on the practice.I hit the ball ok and it was going nice and straight, but it soon veered off and into the bushes.

I always wanted to drive upto Scotland and tour round, but that aint gonna happen now :crybaby:

Mate I originate from the Midlands and still spend a lot of time there. I now live on the east coast of Scotland..

Well in that case they should be perfect for the job !! I must have a look at the Bridgestone Duellers on My car to see if the designation is there ..

On My ones too !! I hadn't a clue if the mark was there or not ! I would have said the tread pattern would suggest that the tyres main purpose was as a normal tyre not a tyre designed for snow !

Agreed. Hence why I said the designation is very wooly. that is also why the snow flake symbol was brought in to propery distinguish winter tyres.

Which got me wondering what S & M tyres were.....:eek:

......but if S&M is "receiving of pleasure from acts involving the infliction or receiving of pain or humiliation", then possibly for people that love the Bridgestone RF system, then those might be classed as a "S&M" tyre?

This may or may not help but under "My settings" (pull down @ top of page, next to your username), Check you have GMT timezone set and DST Correction set.

During BST I always see GMT times on the board when logged out, but correct times when logged in. Of course during the winter, the two agree.

The quirk has been noted before, but some claim the above doesn't help.

All this talk of tyres reminds me, I will need a front pair before winter starts, I will stick with the Geo's as they got me through two snowy winters, as well as getting the wife and what seemed like half her company to work, plus delivered Meals on Wheels for a mate whose van couldnt make it to the more remote houses or to ones up a slope.I understand the need for some for winter tyres, but in deepest Berkshire I can't jusify the cost :-) nor the space for 4 tyres to be stored all year.Any recommendations for tyre web sites beyond black circles/event tyres?Gus
Got my Nexens from Here Mainly because they were the only place i could find that matched the front tyres. They came the next day after ordering them in the morning, which i thought was very good

Wow, EARS are still going. I remember EARS from the 1980s rally car scene. EARS actually stood for Escort And Rally Spares!

I'd never heared of em before and this is the first time i've bought tyres on the net,but they were helpful and the delivery was spot on for me :D just a pity about the fitting after,by a diiferent place i might add.

  • 2 months later...

Snowchains Europroducts has been selling snow chains and snow socks for over 30 years and looking back at the past two years we have had some serious snow fall in the UK and abroad. Thus as a pre-season gesture we are offering all toyotaownersclub members 10% on snow chains and snow socks.

From experience, we know that there are many debates around snow chains versus snow socks. To give a clear answer snow socks work really well on snow covered road by sticking on to the snow generating friction and grip. Snow chains though work extremely well on snow and ice covered roads as they break  up the ice and dig into to generate traction.

If you have questions just reply and we will answer all questions or call us directly on 01732 884408
