Prius Added Performance

Gen 2 increased power by cam timing modification

Posted by: zulutritton - 5 minutes ago

About: 2006 Toyota Prius

I am developing a method of changing the cam timing to change the Atkinson

cycle thus develop power lower in the rev range . The method is to delay the

signal from the VVTi sensor to the ECU causing the ECU to advance the cam timing

, changing what it thinks is retarded Valve timing .As the modification is a signal

delay the device is a plug and play unit with adjustable advance . all of the

advance can be delivered at a lower rpm thus creating more power where required

Why? It is already capable of beating a Golf away from the lights, so why screw up the economy which the car is designed to have...

Could I have a wide bore exhaust with that please?

tbh there are vvti control boxes out there and stock engines are a compromise between environment, fuel quality, power, and mpg.

Is a 10% power improvement worthwhile?

The high octan and increased compresion produces a unmatched proformance when you concider the 400 Nm M2 and CVD. all this improvment with a

dial on the dash to give best of both performance and econome.

Corolla T generaly left, still tring to fine and select gears to suit.>

Corolla = 5 or 6 speed shift. Prius Infinet Do the sums

As we Know the Prius engine is Atkinson Cycle or more so a miller cycle, where the VVti changes the valve position to give the best " economical " performance and does this using the ECU ROM memory program with the other sensors eg O2/ the air fuel sensor maintains this condition. It occurred to me that if the the valve timing was that of a conventional Otto cycle " Yaris 1.6 liter it would produce similar out put . BUT the Compression ratio 13:1 limits a simple valve swap . But! could use the current cam form by deliver it's advance early. As the RPM increased till max advance had been reached . So how to do this : The cam position is sensed by a sensor on the RHS of the head ( magnet ion core pick up coil)this connects to a delay unit some what Like a guitar delay echo unit with the original signal extinguisher leaving an out put signal which can be variably delayed. The resulting delayed signal is then amplified to generate the required 2.5V out put voltage this is then fed to the ECU.HOW IT WORKS the ecu sees the signal and amuses it as (valve time is late) thus advances it to the correct position THUS advancing the cam the real ad vantage here is that the delay is a variable static time eg(30 milliseconds) But as the RPM rapidly increase the delay time is a greater portion of the rotational time thus the cam advance is grater. SO this has meant that the power can develop earlier and increase . OR the delay can be zero and you have you eco prius at the twist of a dial.

If the air /fuel is not push back out the intake it is creating more power. The Use of High octain is required to gain the benefits of the higher compression. My current development will be You tube shortly

What?

PS I've merged the second thread you started into this one as there's no point spamming the forum with multiple threads for the same topic

I'm with Kingo on this

dunno about swallowing it, I just simply don't see the point of it!

Just show us the box of tricks with before and after dyno readings for a Prius - oh I bet you haven't got any.

Ecu remaps and vvti boost boxes are fairly common but the Prius is the wrong target audience.

How about just a resistor to fool it into running rich? Much cheaper.

Mmmmm, what about NOS? Will that help??? Might charge the Battery quicker...
