Rav4 Sat Nav Problems

Hello all

I wonder if anyone can help with an ongoing problem with the built-in sat nav in our 2005 D4D XT5?

Basically the sat nav has worked fine all the years we have owned the car (since new) but over the last few weeks, it has started displaying a warning that the disc is faulty or damaged? The disc looks ok, we haven't ever taken it out of the machine until recently. The fault seems to be getting worse but is intermittant with no pattern! The audio system is unaffected. Is there any way to reset the system?

Any thoughts gratefully appreciated.

Cheers

Do you have an updated disc or an older disc? or can you borrow another from somewhere to check it is not the disc?

As for reset, are we talking about the full colour screen version or "turn-by-turn" under-seat type?

If the 4.2 full screen has anything in common with the later 4.3 fitted units, then a "reset" is basically a Battery disconnect, what a while, then reconnect.

However, again, if it behaves like the later units, it will do a "boot sequence" from the dvd when the Battery is reconnected (it reads software into internal memory).

The upshot of which may be, if there is anything wrong, you may be left with no functionality at all (probably not even radio) if it fails to read its internal software off the disc.

Welcome to TOC by the way.

Hi, I'm having exactly the same problem with my 2006 XT5. There aren't many replies to your question, so did you manage to get it fixed. I was thinking of trying to clean the laser. Let me know please. Cheers

Mine has started doing the same. I have a few discs that all worked. Now the sat nav is having trouble reading them all. I am pretty sure the lazer is on its way out. It is more noticable when the unit is hot. When cold Seems to read dvds no problem. When I pull the dvd out it is quite hot, which gets me to thinking whether there is an internal fan that mat have stopped working. Mine is a B9001 unit. When I get time I will whip it out an see ;-). If the unit is indeed faulty its a new £300 eBay unit for me which will be cheaper than a Toyota repair on my old unit.

I've noticed my disc is also hot when I take it out. Not sure if this was always the case. Will try cleaning the laser with a cleaning disc and hopefully it will work.

An update on my sat unit.

This morning it would not read any discs even from cold, so I disconnected my Battery for 5 mins then re-connected, and bugger  it still would not read discs, but now I had lost my radio too as all the firmware/software had been erased.

So as I had a dead/useless sat nav unit I decided to whip her out and investigate. I opened her up and removed the cd player and the DVD map player (there are 2 in all) I had to do this carefully as the ribbon connector cables are very delicate, I could not see anything wrong, even the lense looked clean no dust in there at all.

So all I did was put some solvent cleaner on a cotton bud and just wiped the lense a couple of times, I put the dvd part back in and tested in the car.......Too my suprise it worked, the firmware loaded up and my satnav/radio is all back to normal.......will have to see how it goes on a drive when it heats up.

***be carefull to only wipe the lense as there are 2 very fine wires coming from the lense to the connector on either side, if broken it would be a ballache to solder back on*********

So either cleaning the lense fixed it or re-seating all the ribbon cables fixed it....thats is all I did.

O.... and there was a fan on the back of the unit and it was working, when all connected up, it also stays on for a while after the keys are taken out of the ignition.

That eBay sat nav unit will have to wait......................

That's great news. I'll be on it like a car bonnet! Cheers

Ive now tried a CD cleaning disc in my sat nav DVD. I tried it with the cleaning disc with no cleaning solution on it. The DVD failed to read the disc (as expected) but it still tried enough to wipe the laser lense. When I removed the cleaning disc the small wiping pad on it was really dirty.

So I tried the sat nav disc in and it works. I will monitor it over the next few weeks as it sometimes worked anyway, but it does seem promising after find dirt on the lense.

Interesting finds. Seems the laser is pretty strong, most of the BMW ones are dead or dying by this sort of age.

Thanks for the update!

If you should find yourself taking the unit apart again, can you take some pics for a DIY?
