My engine has gone in my 2003 Rav. It is a VX 2 litre VVTI. Can anyone tell me if any other Toyota engine will fit?? I am having real trouble getting one. Thanks

Hi Lorraine,

Gone where?

I've got two of these and have never heard of one failing so I'd appreciate it if you could give a bit more info on what happened to it.

Thanks,

Firemac

Welcome to the club Lorraine.

Just keep hunting. There are Jap parts import specialists and they pop up on eBay occasionally. Converting for another engine type is a monumental job, you might as well sell it first.

Good day and welcome to the forum.

There are a number of sources of used Jap engines which of course include Toyota. Also, there are internet sites which contact a number of breakers on your behalf - eg Parts Gateway. More like this too. eBay is another source.

I found most of them are in England, but the cost of shipping isn't too bad.

The vvti engine was fitted to other models as well, but I'm not sure which, nor which may have a similar fitting to the gearbox. Models such as the celica may fit - best to ask opinion from an engine specialist. Locally here, I use a specialist who is well used to changing engines; converting engines etc. I'd guess there will be one around you as well.

Ideally you would be looking for an engine from a car thats been written off due to being rear-ended.

I had the car serviced in March, apparently the mechanic, who is a friend didn't do an oil change, so I believe that is what has caused the engine to fail. I have priced in England and the cheapest I have got so far is £1200. I also need a clutch. As the car is 2003, I just don,t know if it is worth spending this sort of money on to repair. I have only been offered £1000 for it as it is now, I hate selling it at this price.

So what you are saying is you can find an engine but not at the price you want.

If you add up £1000 plus £1200 plus whatever the garage wants for fitting it you will end up with the value which should make it worthwhile. The Jap engines are usually guaranteed.

Hi Lorraine,

That's unfortunate. Perhaps your friend needs to make a contribution??

Sorry to hear of your situation.

However, if the oil change was missed in March that's only an extra 6 months usage on the oil.

I would be very surprise (almost regardless of mileage) if running engine oil for an extra 6 months would be enough to kill an engine !!

Sure the oil might be dirty as hell, but its filtered and while it might be thinner due use, it should still keep things moving.

You might lose some life off your engine but I would not have thought it would destroy the engine.

Are you sure your engines dead, what was the diagnosis ?

I'd agree with Ian as long as Lorraine had been using the fully synthetic recommended by Toyota. If semi or mineral, then 6 months delay in the oil change could be a problem depending upon the use it was getting.

I did 50,000 miles in a Mondeo without changing the oil.. :blushing:

The Celica engine is the same as the Rav's, but it revs much higher so possibly it has different gubbins inside. If you want a Rav engine, get one from a Rav. What exactly has happened to the engine that means it needs replacing? It must have been pretty catastrophic! Are you sure your mechanic is being straight with you?
