All Scion iQ have REAR DRUM brakes, but ONE more airbag!

In some countries in Europe the Toyota iQ has NO rear discs too!!!

Thanks... I really did not know this... thought only the Smart had this building flaw... Glad we have disc's in our country... :)

Will be glad to see the back of rear discs, more trouble than they are worth, drums will come back on small cars, as they are on Yaris

Sorry.. but can not agree with you. Brake drums or from the past: fading / lack of cooling / terrible work servicing / ... bye bye brake pads...

Question:

If so ... So why don't you have them in the front as well then??? Huh...

Because discs on the front is sensible considering the brake balance, the rears hardly do any work, tons of issues with calipers seizing through lack of use, and cars rolling downhill when the handbrake is applied on a red hot disc, the disc cools, bye bye car as it runs away. Drums are much better on smaller cars, discs WERE fashionable, not any more. The general Joe Egg would not be able to tell if drums or discs were fitted through normal driving, we have got used to seeing them, but we are now seeing drums make a return, not before time

Cars are clearly different for different countries due to regulations, cultural preferences, geography, etc. I've made numerous trips to the UK on business and enjoyed the opportunities to get out and drive around the country. In comparing the UK to my home state of Oregon I found that the western 1/3 of Oregon was a lot like the UK, very green and hilly, the rest is high desert country. Oregon is about the same total land area (95,997 sq mi) as the UK (94,060 sq mi) but with only 5.8% of the population (3,641,056 vs. 62,262,000). This, combined with the fact that we're a baby country compared to the UK has resulted with a completely different set of roads and a spread out population. As a result, our cars are often subtley different. Differences have reduced over the years but you notice them every once in awhile.

p.s. Sept. 11, 2001: I was just wrapping up a presentation in York when someone came in and said a plane had hit the World Trade Center.

There is no operational reason why not but they would have to be much larger in diameter, width and have additional cooling features. Size for size disc brakes are more effective but when not used to their full extent such as rear brakes they are prone to seizure and corrosion.

Brake drums are still used extensively on commercial vehicles where space and weight aren't so restricted.

Se attachnent for an example of a really big brake drum.
