The Dastardly Deed Is Done

I took the opportunity of the changing of two alloy wheels to go the whole hog as reported and changed to 5 normal tyres, having bought a brand new alloy off eBay a while back.

I am now running on Yokohama Advan V802's, and my initial impressions are (a) They are very slightly noisier than the Bridgestones in the DRY, and (b)They are virtually silent in the WET, lots up here at the moment, and I will really need to be careful and not get cocky....they are superb in these conditions.

Only got car back on Thursday, but the main difference is the almost complete silence going over the plethora of speed bumps in our housing estate, and this was first remarked on by my mother-in-law's daughter, so it must be noticeable. Cannot work out why they used to thump on entry and leaving these nuisansical things....had the runflats had the stiffer walls it would have made sense. Major bonus this.

That well known exorcist and remover of spirits, Anchorman, was up here recently, and noticed I had really "cracking steering", so he gave me the Toyota Fix Details for that, and it's now completely silent. Result and thanks due...he consumed his remuneration in advance. Wee plastic washers all fitted to suspension strut tops...brill.

There be it, apart from...are youz ready for this...? I retained the TPMS, AND INDEED HAD THE SPARE SIGNED IN TOO, using one of four sensors acquired on eBay. Why did I retain it...? For same reason I will retain the 4 Bridgestone Rings....if some Stealth and Safety wallah ever comes to purchase my car, it's ready to revert. This also negated my having to sign any paperwork at Mr.T regarding the non standard fitment / removal of TPMS mince.

Took a while, but thanks due to Marsky, Wardude, Davrav, Anchordram, shcm, and others in helping me make up my mind whit tae dae....and yes, I am aware the Yoko's are "summer" tyres, whatever The Friar that means, so I will soon find out if any use in winter....if not, one shall revert to Funnerburd Too for the duration.

Happy Kev :yahoo:

Nice one Kev.. A good move Me thinks and one I will definitely be making as soon as I can justify throwing away the tyres currently on the car and sporting huge tread !!

The Yokos were the tyre I was considering fitting a couple of months ago and will for sure be what I fit when the need arises ...

Did You cut the old tyres off ? Or have them removed by machine ??

Wee Charlie. :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

Local Mr T did it on his "special machine", Charlie....he was replacing 2 alloys under warranty anyway, so I got him to get me in the 5 Yoko tyres and do them all at once. Paid a bit extra for the tyres in the long run, but since I had decided to retain the TPMS, I thought it more prudent to let a Toyota man break anything and replace at his cost instead of an indie tyre dealer. All went very smoothly, except for a wee apprentice (it's always his fault, never his supervisor....) piling up 4 well greased-up Bridgestone rings on top of my brand new alloy spare wheel FACE, closely followed by 2 Runflat Tyres I retained also covered liberally in the release grease....if not for my plastic boot liner, there would have been a holy mess.

My compliments go to the service staff and valeting guy at Arnie's, Bishopbriggs...top guys and attention to fixing.

Big Kev :thumbsup:

It seems so. So whats the fix. Do tell... :help:

Mine sounded a bit like someome tapping on the back of the dashboard - sort of 'tut tut tut'.

Happened when slow speed manouvering either on tight or full lock and more noticable in reverse.

See attached for fix.

Parts are low cost but front struts have to be lowered to fit them so moderate labour

Right folks, let me describe these 2 noises.

If its the washers, you will hear a creaking noise mainly when you come up to a junction and just turn the steering into the turn. The noise will come from both sides. The fix is a pair of dead cheap plastic washers that go at the top of the suspension struts but there is quite a lot of labour. I would think you could buy the parts for £20 off kingo and a local garage will fit them for maybe £40-50 per side. Don't try this yourself unless you know what you are doing as the struts have to come apart and those coil springs can kill. It should be re-tracked afterwards. This is the TSB;

If its the steering intermediate shaft, you are listening for a more pronounced clunk when turning the wheel. It comes from between your feet and you can often feel it in the steering wheel when it clunks. I've seen this part sold for knocking on £200 but somebody else reported nearer £150. Kingo is your best man for this and you need a five quid stainless clip for the rubber boot at the bottom of the column. You could do this yourself off ramps if you are reasonably competent and confident. This is the best TSB to see where it goes;

However, those ar US parts so this one has the proper brit part;

You want the second one down ending 80

There is a third possibility but I've never experienced one. In some cases you could get the steering rack come loose. This would result in another heavy clunk like the intermediate shaft but it will sound like it is under the floor and possibly both sides. Again, this could be done off ramps and will cost you nothing so check it first before coughing up for any of the above parts. You just tighten up the rack bolts. This is the TSB:

Mine was just the plastic washers one (first item on Anch's post) but nobody at Mr.T warned me to get tracking done...?

I fully intended to get it checked in lieu of new tyres just fitted, but a wee nod from The Dealer would have been nice...
