Hi,

Just registered on the forum as we have bought a 2002 2.0 petrol RAV4 GX.

In great condition and well looked after by the seems of it.

Did a full detail this weekend to protect her from the winter elements.

I wonder if anyone can help should the Rav be at a fast idle when cold (2000rpm) , it soon drops but is this correct.

Settles down to about 750rpm .

BTW lvg the car .

Hi James and welcome

You have exactly the same Rav as we just recently bought and we also love it :yahoo:

Ours also revs high when first started i just take it as a normal cold start,as you say it soon drops down.

one on the many reasons why we've bought her.

the other main reason is we are about to have a golden retreiver puppy in about 3 weeks time

wife traded in her much loved 2008 mini cooper but has no regrets at all.

my other car is a 300bhp Ford Focus ST, no way that was going in as part ex

i'm also on Ford STOC forum

Got there before Bothy....not particularly proud of masellf.......

A fast idle and high fuel consumption? Does that model year of car have a Check Engine Lamp? You might have a duff 02 sensor.

They do idle fast when starting cold to get it up to temperature, seeing as the rav4's optimum temp is quite high. When your temp gauge reaches around half way the revs should drop to around 700ish, if not then it may be worth looking into (maybe a sensor problem)

I only say this because mine is having all four sensors replaced. The problem I am trying to cure is a lumpy idle (almost stalls) when warmed up. However the RAV4 does have a bit of a reputation for eating O2 sensors, but you may only notice it in the higher fuel consumption. Not trying to scare anyone

I had a Focus ST when they first came out. Brilliant car with one of the best Chassis on any car I've had and trust Me I've had a few !! I had it extensively tuned by Pumabuild in Birmingham It had a straight through exhaust Hybrid Turbo a massive Forge intercooler a Dreamscience stratagem mapping box and and AP brakes with suspension completely changed and load of other stuff I cant remember!!Brilliant !!!

Colour was that shy shade of Orange.......

nice ST

yeh mines been modded up to about the max for the standard turbo at 300bhp.

Use Dreamscience maps but may go to Revo as they are now doing some good maps.

also lowered on Eibachs, whiteline ARB , brakes are standard discs but DS2500 ferodo pads and dot5.1 fluid.

Some are still going pop mind with liners cracking if pushed too hard on the boost

best mod now is the new RS turbo fitted with RS injectors and a custom map, looking at 350bhp proven on dyno :D

heres some of my car , just fitted some powdercoated anthracite wheels, lv em.

back to the RAV , she idles just fine when warm so I reckon it must be normal then .

Talking of dud o2 sensors..

My old Cherokee suffered o2 sensor failure after being erm.. immersed in water. Before the the sensor died the fuel computer thingy was showing around 20mpg average and after the dunking this dropped to around 4-6mpg. The engine was being totally overfueled and wouldn't idle right. It also gave out clouds of cr*p when you put your foot down. It was a pig to change, but changing it made a huge difference.

Annoyingly, my 1AZ-FE detects a failure in the sensor preheat and never goes Closed Loop, leading to poor efficiency (3-4MPG) and a slight smell of fuel at the rear, even when the sensor itself is actually hot hot hot.

The preheat is only needed for some lame EU test for emissions on a cold start, and totally irrelevant after that, assuming the car returns to closed loop.

Oh, I love the Focus ST, well with that you'll already know about heavy fuel consumption!

Your RAV4 GX looks fab, that interior looks brand new.

Hope you have lots of fun with it.

we had to keep checking the year of the rav as we could not believe it was nearly 10 years old !

who ever had her looked after it

just put new wipers on and a boot protector, the molded one , will help keep the boot clean.

filled her up and so far 150 miles from full to half , thats getting stuck in traffic going to work , no long runs.

Hi James.

We were the same when we bought ours, just couldn't believe the condition of her for her age when we was looking and driving her round

Can i ask which boot liner you bought, was it a genuine Toyota or one of the copies. We was thinking of getting one as our pooch loves getting into anything thats wet

Also checked our tick over this morning when swmbo started her up,as it's a little colder this morning and it was showing 1500rpm but by the time swmbo had got it out the garage it had already dropped down.

got ours from Amazon , about £38 quid thats all, a copy but looks like it will do the job just fine.

ours starts at 2000rpm but once out of the drive starts dropping down .

Would you say that it is safe enough for a dog to go on without slipping all over the boot area??

I think i read somewhere that they weren't all that non slip proof??

With all new 02 sensors mine starts at 1500RPM from ice cold with a half flat Battery, drops down to about 6 or 700RPM (difficult to tell from the guage) when the temperature needle is in the middle.

So does it get worse/higher then as the sensor wears??

No, the sensors aren't in use from first starting I think, they need to heat up (and have a little heater for it) before it goes "Closed loop".

Closed loop is when the 4 output 02 sensors are measured and adjustments are made at the fueling input based on the data to improve combustion efficiency.

You can't really go closed loop on a cold engine that is still "on choke" (there is no actual choke device these days, it's done in software by changing the fuel amount & timing). You still need to run rich mixture on a cold engine until the fuel starts to atomise when the engine is hot, as it has been the case on petrol engines for the last 100+ years.

I would say Closed Loop would only happen at the earliest after the engine is out of the blue on the temp gauge.

A faulty sensor prevents the car from going closed loop.

So duff sensors wouldn't change the 1500RPM to 2000RPM. Probably.

Cheers Bob,as you can probably tell i know nothing,as Manuel would say :D

Just wondered why there is a 500rpm difference on the two Ravs and what if anything can be done to bring it down,if the 1500rpm is at the true start up rate?
