Can't Take Out The Radio On My Verso

hi guys,

i've just bought a mp3 adapter which connects to the back of my toyota stereo. The problem i have is that i can't seem to take off the trims to release the stereo. I have a toyota avensis verso 2004 d-4d. I have taken out the ashtray and tried to force off the trim, but it won't come off - anymore force will bend/break it.

This is what the layout looks like:-

Any ideas?

Billy12345,

The top piece with air vents and box comes off first. You need to get your fingers in at the back

to give yourself some thing to pull on. It comes away and up and does need a bit of effort. There should then

be a screw on the exposed piece above the radio. Take that screw out. Next the surround comes away from each side

starting at the top. You will need something to get underneath it without damaging the plastic. Slowly

work your way around that surround prising it away. Then the central part comes away with the clock, heater switches

etc attached by a connector....you can easily disconnect that part and take it away completely. Then the radio

will have four screws...two each side...one at the back and one at the front. You should then be able to

take the radio out disconnecting the aerial and power leads etc.

Be prepared to use a bit of effort. Took me about 40 mins first time and can now do it in my sleep. I used

a rigid piece of plastic to prise out the first piece of surround. It needs to be strong enough but not too thick

to get behind the surround and prise it away. Once you done it once you'll see how it all fits together.

I might have a diagram somewhere and if I can find it will post it up.

thanks ken.

I'm a bit confused mate as fig 5 is showing bolts which i can't find. I assume these will be hidden behind the trim, so how can i take off this trim? Oh and FYI, I have tried to take out the ashtray and look for any bolts, but couldn't find any.

Billy 12345,

There are no bolts holding the trim on.. Just what Toyota call "hooks". You have to exert a bit of pressure

to get these "hooks" out. Once you have done it once and can see how it all fits together then you will understand.

The top trim bit is key. Get your fingers into the holes at the back of that piece of trim with the lid open and try

and wiggle it and pull it away and upwards. It does come away but you need to pull hard.

hi ken,

sorry for the late reply. I tried pulling the storage box (on top of the air vents) towards me and had no luck. In fact i almost put my whole body weight to pull it out, but stopped when i heard some sort of a cracking noise

You say these are on some sort of hooks that hold these covers, but i can say that i did put a lot of effort into it..anymore and i would have broken the covers.

Could i not somehow prise it out with a tool? What do you suggest?

Billy12345,

If it ever stops raining here I'll do some pictures and video and upload them.

thanks very much ken mate...sorry for all the trouble  .

I think it'll be easier for you to place a camera and take a video, rather the pictures as i can then clearly see what your doing.

Its been raining heavy here too, although its now stopped.

Thanks again and i look forward to your video.

What is going on here........4 attempts to upload some small videos and two other replies have just vanished.

This forum is not really up to doing anything even slightly complicated.

Will try to upload later when I have calmed down a bit.

sorry to hear that mate and i know where your coming from...unfortunately this forum does have a lot of problems, such as crashing or difficulty uploading photos/videos. But why not upload to youtube instead? its a lot easier and will be handy for others to see too.

I had a look at your video and its great...the only problem is that you've already somehow taken the air vents and top storage box out...thats the bit i'm stuck on...i've pulled and pulled, but i can't do it...it's like its stuck. :crybaby:

Billy12345,

As promised...my son videoing me taking the box unit out. Nothing else to show I'm afraid.

I do not think my one is any different from your. Maybe worth checking there are no screws

holding the box in at the rear of it. Pretty sure there won't be. If you think about it there

is no other way to access the sides of the unit to get screws in and out.

Best of luck!

ken, can i just say THANK YOU SO MUCH! :yahoo: I've managed to pull out the box and now have access to the radio. Your a star mate

The reason i was struggling is because for some reason, the storage box/vents needed immense amount of strength and i was worried incase i break them. Eventually it slowly, but surely wriggled out.

Now that i've managed to pull the stuff out, i'm gonna install an mp3 player. Will let you know how i get on...

Once again thanks a million! :)

Wahey...well done my man. You just have to do it once and then the light comes on in our tiny little man's brain.

Glad I could be of some help. Let me know how you get on and you can add this to your Toyota CV.

Ken

PS You might be able to help me...can you have a look and see if you still have the original Battery in your car.

If it is NOT a Furukara (the original battery)

can you jot down the make, model, etc. I need a new Battery but can I find the replacement

type that someone will be happy to sell me. See a new thread I started.

hi mate,

i've posted some Battery pics on your other thread. I've already run into more problems :crybaby: I can't connect the mp3 player as the connections on my car radio are much more complicated. I'll post back with more info and photos to explain later.

Billy12345,

What is it you want to connect to the unit? and what sort of unit do you have in the car?

If it is a cable to allow you to connect an MP3 player then others have been down that route and unsure if anyone

has had any success. Honestly can't remember.

Can help with the existing wiring but worth doing a search on forum to see what others have done re MP3 player.

As you can see I replaced the existing headunit with one that has CD, USB connection and memory card slot. It also

does bluetooth and that's the way I connect my phone (including songs) to the unit.

Sorry about the delay in reply mate. I replaced my previous vehicle with an mp3 player headunit and within a month the car was smashed and the unit stolen, so i decided this time i'm going to get an mp3 adapter that i can hide inside glove.

I have a standard toyota cd player and it has a 6 cd changer in the boot of the vehicle. I bought this mp3 adapter that i supposed to work on my vehicle:-

http://www.yatour.net/shop/?type=detail&id=46.

I plugged out the dash and radio, which currently has the cd changer and sat nav connected. But the problem i found is that the cd changer has a split cable which allows the radio power to be plugged into it. The mp3 adapter does not come with such a cable and can only connect directly to the cd changer port - hence i have no power. I'm thinking if it's possible to connect the 2 power wires somehow into the the connector of the mp3 adapter?

Sorry for a confusing post  . If your not sure what i'm on about, please ask away. I've attached a diagram i made to help you understand:-

Hi mate, What I think they are saying is that you have to take the single power supply wire into a 2 way switch and output 2 wires from that switch into each device so that only the CD changer OR your new device will work depending on which way the switch is .............. ie switch left for the cd and then right for the mp3 device. I may be wrong here but that's how I see it from their instructions.

Best regards,

Pete.

well the way i thought it was that i either keep cd changer or mp3 adapter, in which case i'm happy to lose the cd changer.

there isn't any 2 way switch, so could i do something, like redo some of the wiring? and advice?

  • 3 weeks later...

hi guys,

hope everyone is okay

I'm just posting to let ken and anyone else know that you can connect an mp3 adapter to your original car radio as ken previously mentioned that people have had some issues.

I simply got hold of a Y cable and that allowed me to connect both the radio and mp3 adapter and all works fine.

hope this helps others.
