Paint

Hi All

Dont know if you remember I mentioned that the roof of my new/secondhand Prius, had some very bad bird crap marks on the roof some are 2 " in dia, dont know what the last owner did, not clean the car to often I would say.

When I bought the car, it was when we had the snow, they had to clear it off, and three times it had a flat Battery, any way they fitted a new Battery, then recently the radio packed in, they change that, and also asked if there was anything else, again I metioned the roof marks, I was told to speak to the business manager, which I did, he had a look and said (they are bad) I will see what I can do, told me to take the car in the following week, so that their paint guy could have a look,I did, he came back to me to say he cannot sort it, the roof must be repainted, and offer to pay half, to say I was not happy about it was an understatement, so when I got home I wrote to the general manager, stating that I thought it was their responsabilty as this should have been seen and sorted before the car was put up for sale, the letter I sent on the 23rd August, been away for a short time, had not heard from then, (no letter) when we got home on Sunday my wife asked if I had checked the answer machine, no I said, when I did I found a message from them saying to call them, which was recorded on the 25th,) which I did on Monday, spoke to the sales manager, who said it was all sorted and approved, to take the car in next week for it to have the roof repainted, as they wanted it for 3 or 4 days they would lend me a car to get about in.

You might say why did I not spot this when I looked at the car, well it was in artic conditions, the blooy car would not sart, each time I looked at it, the sat nav did not work, so I think I was concerned about the starting and missed it, there must be 10 crap marks on the roof, I do not know if the first owner had the paint protection on it, if he did it does not work, I took the advice of people on this forum about waxing it with Collinite, which I have done, yesterday, I found some crap on the roof, shot of spray polish away it went, the wax was £15, the paint protection they wanted £400, a lesson here some where.

So far I have been quite pleased with the way Inchcape Basingstoke have looked after me, mot on the 27th.

Very fortunate to get bird lime paint damage covered by any form of warranty as the corrosive effect is well known and is normally excluded.

Well done...that's a good result!

I wouldn't have called it a warranty issue really, the marks were there when the car was purchased.

The dealer has been very fair, some would turn round and say it was reflected in the price.

Hi.

Dont think so, I paid £11000 for the car, when I got it home it was in a s**t state inside, a big blue stain on the rear seat, the top of the rear back rest was filthy as was the back of it, there is to much oil in the engine, (as I have read on here) what else,

the strap that lifts the boot floor was missing, the Battery was knackered,no discs in the sat nav (sorted later) all in all I think the car was badly presented, in fact I think they had bought it in and done nothing to it before selling it, this is what I told the general manager in my letter, this car is the dearest I have ever paid for a secondhand car, so I was expecting it to have been sorted, this car cost me more than my XJ8 Jaguar I sold to buy this. As I said after a bit of toing and froing they have sorted most things out, if you were to see the roof you would understand what I am saying, I tried to get a picture of it, but its all most impossible because of all the reflections, as long as its sorted I will be happy, love the car, just clocked 56mpg my best so far.

Going back to the post, I took the car back to them the day after I collected it to show and complain about the roof. I beleive no one had looked at it, as they seemed suprised when I pointed it out, the sales guy said he could do nothing about it, he was suprised when I showed him.

Any way its book in tomorrow week, we will see what happens.

Cars should not be on display in that condition, but like buying anything else second hand, you should always point out faults to be rectified before collection. I understand about snow and ice being on the car, but the interior stuff, brakes etc should have been done before you took delivery, for them to say nobody noticed it is a joke, a used car passes through the hands of lots of people in a dealership, the buyer/sales manager when taking it in P/EX, the salesman himself, valeters, workshop etc etc

The paintwork cost would have been paid for out of their goodwill budget, it would not be claimable under warranty

I would say to anybody buying a used car, before you buy your car, WRITE a list of jobs you have agreed to have done and hand a copy to your salesman or sales manager, that way, there can be no doubts later as to what was agreed. Please also bear in mind that as a used car, there may be minor defects the dealer will not want to put right, especially when it comes to scratched trim and things that might be expensive for him to put right, that is his decision so if you see anything like that, ask if it will be sorted BEFORE you buy the car
