06 Avensis Turbo

Hi there my 06 avensis makes a wisthle sound when i take the foot of the acellerator at low speed and hi speed . The car pulls fine and dosent hesitate but still im worrid that the turbo or other componet might be failing or about to fail as im on a tight budget at the moment canot aford to take it to a mechanic. Any ideas of what it might be?

Usually the whistling sounds come from loosen belts or pulleys which drive them. Look at that area first.

Air leaks in the pipework could also give you a whistling sound.

I have been in a newer avensis the turbo noise is always present.

the worst if turbo does not create a whistle noise following the gas pedal.

if you state at low speed -- this whistle can not be originated thru hoses due to small scavenging pressure and wise.

a character whistle is an indicator of good performance of your turbo. a whistle follows your gas pedal and depends on an engine loading. Cheers/Igor

if its when you take your foot off the gas mine does the same i think its just the wastegate releasing the pressure into the exhaust??

that is a perfectly normal noise your hearing

the whistle sound is an air suction thru an air filter creates such sound.

it means an air filter is in good condition, as well as turbo itself is in order.

the worse when you hear only engine rattle and nothing more.

Hello there , thank you for all the posts and replies you have been very helpful.

I've cheked the pipe work and the belts and pullies and everithing seems fine. Also i might have discribed the sound as a whistle but im wrong tge other day i asked a fried to drive the car for me to listen from the outside and realized the sound is from the exoust its like a " WOOO" sound when the accelerator pedal is lifted .

Should that mean its time for a new exaust ?

Or something else?

As it's starting to get colder check the inlet pipe to your air filter box, my 2.2 used to be fine in the summer but would start to growl when it started to get cooler, all through winter but disappear again when the weather warmed up, always when releasing the throttle. There's a foam ring around where it joins the box which does a rubbish job of dampening vibrations between the box and the pipe. Just glue or silicon it into the filter box and away you go.

I get the same sound when I take my foot off the gas quickly. Doesn't do it otherwise.

I would describe it more like a sigh rather than a whistle though.
