The only time I have had a smell from air-con is when a car is brand new. This is normally due to the plastics used in the heater ducting.

There are two different types of cabin filter - one has an activated carbon added which reduces odours, etc.

Also it is not uncommon for air-conditiong systems to gather a biological growth inside - this is due to the moisture condensing on the air-conditioning condensor unit. To cambat this you can get the system treated with an antibac., treatment.

Ive never known a perfume smell, usually a rotten egg smell when the system needs a bacterial clean

I had my air con cleaned just 3 months ago and that left a residual odour..... it is not a bad smell but once the air con has been running for a couple of minutes it disappears.

I am wondering if this is what you can smell, if so ask a dealer to change the filter and I hope that would cure it for many months :)

Why not disconnect the air con altogether ? Simple enough job, all you need is a shorter belt. My mate has just done this 2 weeks ago as his aircon pump went & he didn't want to part with the money for a new 1. Hope this helps you.......

The metal evaporator (similar to a heater matrix) is the only part of an air con system that the "air" comes into contact with. Nothing is added to the air in any way... it just passes through the cold matrix which becomes wet with condensation (which drains automatically) and this cold (and now dehumidified) air is blown into the cabin.

As to a perfumy smell... if the aircon system has been serviced and a fungicide treatment been used then these can smell and it does last for ages. Out 1.4 Corolla had this done some years ago by Toyota and it was still detectable 12 months later (although the car only does low mileage). Smelled of fruit.
