Battery Drain Due To Power Leakage Of 0,19A

Hi all,

A question from the Netherlands, I hope you can help me out. The Battery of my Avensis D4D wagon (2004) drains in about three to four days. I narrowed down the problem to a power leakage of about 0,19 A. It stops when I pull the DOME fuse of 7,5A.

I could not find a problem with the interior lights so I took out and disconnected the unit with the speed gauge, fuel gauge clock etc. No more power leakage. This unit has a white and a blue connector. The leakage stops when the white connector is unplugged. The DOME fuse is the only one that stops the 0,19 A (apart from the ECU-B/DOME/RAD 1 fuse of 30A in the motor compartment). I checked the voltages on the pins of the white connector. Only one pin with a red/white has a voltage on it: 11,8V. All other pins seem dead.

Is the gauge unit always powered with this voltage? Any suggestion on what I could check next?

Thanks in advance,

Frank

Thats normal.

1) check and remove all bulbs (interior) mesasure volts

2) check boot light, its not staying on?

3) unplug heater and aircon unit.measure voltage.

report back

190 milliamps is high and can drain a less then new Battery surprisingly quickly.

Just a thought... I have an Auris and notice that there appears to be a relay that drops out around 20 ? minutes after stopping the engine. So that will be pulling current plus whatever it powers.

Have you monitored the drain over a long period of time to see if it reduces ?

You might if you have a good enough meter be able to deduce this by measuring the voltage dropped across the earth lead from Battery to chassis. At 0.19 amps the voltage will be in the region of 1 to 2 millivolts at a quick guess. Very small but easily measurable on a good DVM and so you can see if it drops after a certain period. Doing this and you don't have to pull fuses or disconnect anything which can give false results if something does only power down after a certain time.

Don't discount the Battery as being the cause either... it may have a faulty cell or just be down on capacity. Try putting the headlights, foglights and heated window on with the engine OFF. A good battery should easily stand that for quite some time. Do any of the cells "fizz" and bubble if you try that... they should not.

hi

check may be you lose power thru glow plugs that might be still ON because carbon deposits inside the respective relay.

cheers/Igor

Hello Frank, their are lots of components that are connected to the Battery (which may well be on it's way out) whilst the ignition is turned off like the ecu etc, one thing that may give trouble is the alternator due to faulty diodes.

Anyway I have attatched a .PDF of the wiring as this should make it clear just what is live without the ignition being ON, starting at the Battery + on the left hand side of the pages.

When my Battery started losing charge after being stood for a few days I found swiching off the bluetooth phone cradle cured the fault for a short while but this only helped until the battery finally gave up! Just a little note on batteries ... don't waste your time like I did looking for a "cheap" one as the correct and cheapest battery can be got from your Toyota dealers on a price promise of around £90 for a diesel @ 850amp .

Regards and good luck ..... Pete.

Thanks for all the advise!. My Toyota dealer advised me to get a used gauge unit but since my father-in-law has an Avensis (not a diesel) I swapped the units as a test. This did not solve it. I then checked the radio/heater unit and when I unplugged one of the radio connectors the leakage was gone. I swapped the radio with the one from my father-in-law and this solved it. The radio was the problem. I've ordered a new one with a frame cover (1DIN). Now I can finally listen to MP3's in my car ;-)
