2.0 D4D Clutch

Hi all,

I decided to buy my old company car from auction, a 58 reg 2.0 Avensis D4D TR with 69k on the clock and a full main dealer service history. I've known the car from new and I know it's a good one, having done 38k miles in it myself.

However, it has been left standing for 6 months and when it came to auction the rear brake was stuck on and they couldnt move it, so it never went through. a couple of days later they had got it going and it reapeared at auction, I won and have just got it home.

The first thing I noticed was that it was running a space saver instead of the normal wheel that it had one the first time at auction, I assumed it had picked up[ a puncture and thought nothing of it. The brakes juddered like mad (but have since improved with use) the handbrake is loose (no big deal) and the overwhelming stink of something burnt.

This morning I went to get the assumed puncture repaird and discovered the tyre was totally shredded.... Some, Moron, at the auction centre had obviously decided it would be a good idea to drive the car to a garage with the rear wheel totally seized, ruining the tyre and bu**ering the clutch. I havent really been able to do a handbrake test as the handbrake is completely slackened off, but the biting point seems high to me, and I'm sure I have felt it judder. The smell is so bad you can smell it as you walk past the car outside.

What do you reckon, ruined clutch?

My local independant garage has quoted £150 labour for replacing the clutch plus the cost of the parts, is there any specific one I should buy? or just use whatever he fits? I've read about DMF Flywheels needing replacment, would I need this too? I imagine driving a car with the rear wheel siezed would tend to bu**er up most things in the drivetrain :(

Probably worth a little look at the cheaper repair first. If the wheel was locked it may have eased off slightly during the journey so it may be that the pads have overheated and they will stink the same/similar to the clutch. To check the pads its a simple matter of checking whether they stink. If its not the pads then, yep it sounds like the clutch but do not despair, it should not have ruined anything else.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the replys,

I had my local garage check it out and put it through the MOT which was due, it definitly needs new rear pads, as for the clutch he reckons it's maybe got a dry spot where it's been overheated causing it to slip a little and judder sometimes when changing up a gear under load. It drives ok but it's disappointing to say the least.

The clutch pedal travel feels rough rather than smooth, and I fancy the engine sounds a bit rougher then I remember, it used to pull quite well through the rev range but now the engine note changes at 3,000rpm seems like it's struggling to push beyond that (although it does), I know diesels dont rev very high anyway and there's no real need to but i'm sure it used to do it. maybe just me, as druid boy said it should not have ruined anything else, I would have thought the clutch would be the weak link and slip/fail before any serious damage occured to the engine/gearbox.

It is due an interim service (booked in at main dealer) and it has been sat in a car park for 6 months which can't have done it much good? I did notice it choo chooing a lot from the turbo when I drove it home but with use that has improved, maybe because it hasnt been used for so long things have started to seize up?
