Celica Noise After Driving Without Any Engine Oil :(

Hi guys, I bought my Celica 1.8 vvti 140bhp, about a month ago.

The car was as smooth as silk. No engine noise or anything... until yesterday

So today after doing a bit of research I was advised to check the engine oil. To my surprise the oil level was barely marked on the dipstick. It was dangerously low!

The noise comes on about 1.5k + the sound level varies. The sound also stops when I stop accelerating. when I accelerate a little hard it comes on.

I don't know which part is giving me the problem. Can anyone tell me the what it could be, and an estimate fixing price. (Is it easy to do it yourself? I am quite competent when it comes to repairing cars)

Could the loss of oil cause any other problems that is causing the noise.

Totally unrelated to last night. Could it be a timing belt issue, tensioner... etc.

I will try and record a clip maybe and put it up on youtube. also try and figure out which part of the engine its coming from...

I topped it up with oil today and put in about 2litres until I hit maximum on the dipstick. 5W30 semi synth.

I so love the car and had loads of plans for it but I don't know the future now. Thanks guys :(

Oh dear..... another 1ZZ has just grown some engine wings and is floating up to engine heaven.

Yeah deffo you're gonna need a new lump dude. But there a loads on eBay for £500 buy now.

The 1zz loves to drink oil and kill itself.

After doing some research I have found that the bearing might be gone (hopefully it's only that)

Ill open up the sump this week sometime and check for the extent of the damage.

Any mechanic or car savvy people know ehat else it could be?

If your car is a 1999 to a 52 plate, then the problem is most likely the death rattle and means a new engine. This is due to adesign flaw on ALL 1ZZ engines before 2003. Regular servicing & oil monitoring keeps this a bay generally.

If you have an 03 onwards, then it may be possible that you've done the main bearings. Even 190's can doo their bearings in, as I have read about it quite a few times.

If it is the older 1ZZ engine, then you WILL need a new engine. DO NOT buy a recon engine. If you do you will have nothing but problems, I know plenty of 140 & 190 owners who's bought recons & the quality of work is shocking.

Thanks for that. The noise is coming from one cylinder. I reckon it's the con rod bearing. I don't mind trying to repair this just for experience while I look for a new engine.

Anyone has any idea where I can buy the bearings from - In the UK?

Or is anyone interested in buying the car as it is :P

If I find an engine soon, ill keep it. If i find a buyer I will sell it....

And buy the 190!!!!

You'll need to go to Toyota for the bearings. Any main dealer will be able to order them for you. But is it a job you're able to do? Its a full engine removal and strip down.

If you want to sell on your car as it is you'll only get a few hundred pounds for it with the engine as it is unfortunately.

If you want a problem free instal, speak to Se7en Motorsports. They are based in Coventry. They did my 190 swap & supercharger install.

Damn your car must be quick. Its looking too expensive trying to do an engine swap. My cars pretty stock so I might as well sell it on and start over :( :(

As you've already got a 190, it's just a case of switching the engines. So the engine could be got for under £1k, then say what £500-600 for the labour cost. Plus you could sell the old engine on for scrap or to a recon company for rebuild.

I have no idea how quick my car is, but lets just say if I want to hit lift in 5th gear, I'm doing over 120mph.

You can rebuild the engine you have bearing 3 it will be which if standing facing engine its third on right, acl bearings work very well but you must re grind crankshaft and check all wear. Is it worth It? depends how far you go I went for a full engine out and full rebuild but added in a load of engine mods but you can do it for under 500 but engine will go at some point if not checked so up to you. 190 swap for long term but if your only waiting for a better car I wouldn't bother. Fix it cheap run it into the ground and buy better next time round

Yep it's up for sale as it is.

I drained the engine oil today and had a look into the filter and the drained oil itself. No sign of any metal shavings... Could I have caught onto the bearing damage early?

Going to drop the sump next week as I do not have any axle stand. I will know for defos then. The curiosity is killing me

Drop the sump will get you not that far you can see one and two but can't get to three and four pistons as sub frame and braces get in way to do a proper look you need the engine out but can get a good enough check just on noise. Mr T 's can also check it very well for you and dont charge
