Hi there, just recently bought a 2005 Rav4 2.0 D4D and was a bit disappointed to find that I am only getting 28mpg, tested by brimming (onboard computer says 38mpg) - This is a mix of in and out of town driving. The car has been well serviced (full 2 wks ago), has no binding brakes or fault codes. Anyone know of a common problem or am I just unlucky? :crybaby:

It should return 40ish knocking around and 50ish on a trip where the speed is around 65-70.

Check the air filter is clean and be sure to change up at about 1500rpm. These engines like to lug.

Have checked air filter, it is absolutely spotless! Will check to see if I have a fouled up EGR valve at the weekend. It has only done 59K - don;t understand it! :help:

Right, have now changed air filter, anyway! - checked and cleaned EGR valve and have stuck a tuning box mod which attaches to fuel rail and map sensor. Now I get 33mpg in town! Suppose that will do and will get back once I have reason to do long distance drive to let you know what I get there.

you should also consider condition of tyres and each wheel contact spot area -- the more area the more fuel consumption and opposite on new tyres.

it is clear this spot depends on wear of each tyre.
