I had my 2009 Auris SR180 for a few weeks (used with 10k on the clock), i was very impressed with its pulling power/acceleration at high speed.

I had engine lights come on, the engine light and the VSC light.

I booked it into a dealer, it drove normally whilst i was waiting to take it in (3 or 4 days).

They said it needed an oxygen sensor for the exhaust, but not in stock, so another few days wait.

I took it in again, and job done, i drove away, but both lights came on again, so i reversed back into the dealer.

I left it with them, and the next morning it was done, they said it needed another oxygen sensor so two in total (?!), glad that had that extra one in stock this time (?!)

Anyway straight away when i put my foot down my heart sank, it was slower!! :(

It seems only 80% of the beast that it was, it still drives well to an ordinary joe, but when you put your foot down, it definately doesent have the raw zip that it did before.

I took it back, but i can blame them for just thinking i was a nutter.

Its defintely lost its edge, but as i say not obviously.

Its been about 5 days now, and im a bit gutted.

What can i do? What could have caused this?

I mentioned the EGR to the technican, and he said either its blocked or its not, and he's been replacing engines when their blocked. Then i thought well it couldnt be that anyway, as why would it suddenly happen when he replaced oxygen sensors?

Before i felt confident enough to put my footdown against most comers, now i feel a bit reticent. I could only just keep up with a 1.8 petrol honda today,

Please help, i dont want to go back on the prozac..............

Maybe give it some time to re adjust to the new sensor? I know some things take time to bed in properly.

Could be worth pulling the EGR and having a look?

Could be they updated the ECU, and made the car less aggressive to increase fuel economy... maybe ask Mr T?

Likely that they have reset your ECU in doing the work, from that it would have lost your driving profile so to speak.

I am afraid you will just have to keep driving it like you used to, and hopefully it will return to how it was eventually. The ECU will learn your driving profile over time.

Hi, The technician said he' did nothing but swap the sensors.

Hi, i only had the car a couple of weeks, and the performance was consistent and impressive, when the problem happened as described the performance has now dropped, and despite driving it like a loon for 5 or so days, its not improving, its more like a 1.8 or 2.0 diesel, not a 2.2.

Well It was probably driven hard for a while long before you had it.

Your car may have been throwing more fuel into the chamber due to a dodgy sensor, and now its running as it should the fuel flow is less and the car feels slower.

Your car may have been throwing more fuel into the chamber due to a dodgy sensor, and now its running as it should the fuel flow is less and the car feels slower.

p.s. i filled up 3 times since owning it and pre the sensor swap, each time i got 360 miled, so 36 mpg, i have filled up since the swap, so if it was due to running rich, i should hopefully achieve more than 36mpg, if its exactly the same (360 miles on the trip when im empty) can i conclude that it was not due to running rich?

Leicester is a long way for me to come at my own expense to test drive your car mate!

It would probably be easier to track one down at a local garage and take that out for a drive instead?

Ah well, i see that as the best solution a head to head race, would settle the matter. Its a good idea test driving one, but im too honest, i would feel bad pretending i was interested in their car.

If anyone else in a SR180 is around leicestershire, and fancys seeing if my car really is slower than it should be (without you having a 200bhp chip), then let me know.

No problem mate, but I really don't think that a 'race' is a good idea.

Firstly it's illegal, and not something I would have done even if i did live close by.

Secondly, there are too many things that could make a difference to the outcome, ranging from different tyres giving a difference in grip level, to unpredictable people on the road, or simply missing a gear change etc etc.

If you can find one local that you can drive in a similar manner to your own (driving from 30 to 60 in 4th for example) then you should be able to notice any difference in a more controlled and legal way.

Only 6 posts and asking people to race? Are you serious?

If your car feels that much slower, take it to Toyota and demand that they inspect it, otherwise you'll just have to live with it.

Yes im serious. Race is perhaps the wrong word, to accelerate to 70 from a standing start in a reasonably prompt way, on a long road with no traffic (there are several such places in leicestershire), a few goes should ascertain if there is any significant difference, i dont think this would be illegal if the circumstances were not dangerous, and you stayed within the speed limit.

I did take it back and complain.

Im not seriously expecting anyone to say yes though.

Even if somebody did "race" you, it wouldn't prove anything. There are too many variables, and even then no 2 cars are the same.

Could simply need more time to get back to what it used to be.

If it was me, I would reset the ECU, run a tank full of premium fuel through the tank and see how it is after 500 miles of mixed driving.

When I encountered similar problems I:

- reset the ECU

- cleaned the EGR Valve

- got the fuel filter replaced

-> Problem solved. Performance good again.

Cool, can i please impose on someone then to let me know, how do i:

Reset the ECU?

Is the fuel filter something i can change?

I know how to check out the EGR

I will do these things at the weekend if someone can let me know how, i have booked a diagnostic at a diesel engine specialists, but i can cancel if these things work.

I took my negative lead off and reset my ECU, and its a lot better, say 95% back to normal, im sure it will get even more better if this is achieved immediately after the reset.

Great! :) I did that, by removing its fuses for about 8-10 minutes. Here on this forum you can find a good EGR cleaning tutorial, illustrated with pics. It takes about 30 minutes to complete...

The fuel filter is a more difficult issue. I'd say take it to a mechanic. It cost me about 15 pounds, including an oil/oil filter change too.

I think i was kidding myself.

In the end i took it to "Diesel Diagnostics" in Coventry. They said it had an unusually high (in his experience) pressure at the DPF on idle, something like 239 bar (2.4?) and he suspected it was partially blocked, resulting in the reduced performance.

My girlfriend and i have been doing some zero to 100k sprints on a safe stretch, and getting between 9.5 to 10 seconds, its supposed to be sub 8 seconds?

I took it back to Toyota, they said no error codes (The same mantra) and some pipes near the DPF which normally are an indicator of a dpf blockage were not blocked, so they still do not think there is a problem, they reckon they got 8.5 seconds on zero to sixty, although if they stoped there watch bang on 60mph, that would have only been 58mph according to my sat nav, i was stopping it at 100k assuming with the accuracy of the speedo, it to be about 60mph.

Im now going to write to Toyota, and state my next action is to take on a rolling road, to establish the bhp and zero to sixty, and if the figures are significantly away from expected i want a proper investigation, im going to ask if they want to make any action before i do this.

I tried to clean EGR valve, but my setup is different to the pictures on here, so i couldnt continue, but the bits i did see on dismantling didnt seem that blocked up.

Any thoughts, help welcomed.
