Strange Whining Noise

Any of you good people got any ideas.

Got a 4.3 XT5 petrol manual with 30 odd K

Whilst driving there is a strange whining coming from undermeath the car, I'm thinking its similar to diff. whine, is this normal?

I've just put 4 new Bridgestones on as someone said it may be the tyres, no change.

Its pretty loud and usually when not under power, please come up with some suggestions as I'm still using it to the max and love the car and would hate to wreck it.

Many thanks

Chris

If as you say it sounds like diff whine, which is effected by loading the drive, the first thing I would check would be oil levels.

If they are OK,my next step would be to mark the flanges on the pinion and propshaft, seperate them and then check that the pinion nuts were tight enough.

Chas, are you sure it is whining,or is it whimpering or whinging.

Bet your wife would say the same thing happens when she is driving. ;) :D :D

Thanks for that I'll check the levels

forgive me for being thick, my first 4 x 4

but I presume there are levels front and back.

Are they easy to get at and whats the right level.

Thanks a lot

Hi Chris,

I bought a 54-reg XT3 3-dr petrol auto in May and was concerned about what sounded like a diff/bearing whine something like what you describe. Moreso because our 02-reg VX is very quiet.I took it to local Toyota dealer who checked it over and suggested that it was probably the tyres. It seems that varying wear patterns, flat spots, etc. can set up strange noises. Anyway I recently had the alloys refurbed and asked the fitter to swap the tyres back to front and, guess what? The noise has gone. Now you might ask why it isn't still there on the fronts and I'd suggest that the large open space of the passenger cabin acts as a sort of "boom box" amplifying any mech or road noise, whereas at the front, there's so much more eqpt in a confined space to absorb/reflect the noise. Also I reckon that the XT3 doesn't have as much sound-proofing matl as the VX.

Anyway it might be worth getting the tyres swapped front to back first to see if there is a difference. It worked for me.

Good Luck,

Jim

No Chris, you are not thick, nor would anyone on here suggest that you are.

Its better to ask than make a mistake that could cost you ££££s just because you did not access the wealth of knowledge lurking in the brains of those who have got the T shirt!

Suffice to say I exclude myself from that august group.

However, you are correct that there are two diffs, and as far as I am aware they are checked the same way i.e.removing the oil level/filler plug which is usually found roughly halfway up the side of the diff case.

Do not be surprised if oil runs out when you remove the plug as often it is found,if it has been topped up, that it has been filled till it runs out and then the plug replaced before it runs all over the garage floor.

Suggest you wear gloves when doing this as the oil can have unpleasant and sometimes permanent effects on the skin.

Just hope I'm not stating what you know!:unsure::rolleyes:
