Engine Management Light On

Car has been put on computer, came up as fuel light malfunction. When engine management light comes on car loses power. Any ideas as to what is wrong?

My 02 d4d done the same but i think it came up fault code p1226 fuel line malfunction. I changed the fuel filter and cleaned the gauze in the fuel tank but made no difference. So next cheapest option was to take out the injectors and get them tested and it turned out one of them wasnt working properly. Got a used one replaced it and no trouble since. Just to be sure is the car losing power at speed or just when you go to take off in 1st? Mine lost power when i went to take off then engine light came on switch the car off then all was good for a wile.
