RE WHEELS

I THINK YE ARE ALL MAD WITH YOUR FOURTEENS ON AN 86 I HAVE THIRTEENS WITH 185/60 ON MY ONE AND ITS JUST A DREAM TO DRIFT COMPLETELY RESPONSIVE HONEST TO GOD TRY THEM AN YOU WILL NEVER GO BIG AGAIN :hokus-pokus:

AS FOR SUSPENSION BILLIES WITH FENSPORT SPRINGS ALL THE WAY BEST SET UP I EVER HAD AND I TRIED A FEW

Posted

I do agree with you 'simply sideways' about the wheels and suspension but the only reason i run 14's is cuz i was loosing out on speed through the gears on the track! i can pull about 60-65 in second were as when i tried a set of 13's borrowed from a mate i could only pull 50-55 which was loosin me time on the track!

WHAT DO YOU THINK OFF THE FOURTEENS FOR HANDLING

AND YEAH ITS A BUGGER HOW YOU LOSE SO MUCH PACE WITH THE THIRTEENS BUT THERE IS A WAY AROUND IT IF YOU GET A DIFF FOR AN EIGHTY FOUR OR FIVE THE PRE FACE LIFT MODEL THE RATIO IS DIFFERENT TO THE LATER MODEL CAUSE THE EARLY ONES CAME WITH 13S AS STANDARD NO LOSS OFF SPEED AND BETTER HANDLING I THINK MYSELF :thumbsup:

Ive had 13s,14s and 15s and it has to be 13s all the way, mines an 84/85 model and she loves em

I'm trying to steer readers gently away from their 'it has to be at least 17 inches' ideas. So although 13s are probably best for handling, I reckon my new 14" Mk2 Celica Supra alloys should do the trick and get people thinking along old skool lines.

I've even recently heard about somebody putting a set of 20s on a new Citroen C2. Can you believe that? Show those wheels a camber in the road and it'll fling the driver off into the nearest hedge.

Posted

Thats what we want to see, C2s in hedges all over the place, Yee-haw

I still cant believe i get laughed at by the plastic projectile boy racers. People have no taste. i mean there isnt a single new car that i crave after, i thing the P2000 spec impreza is the newest car i like.

The handling is awesome mate especially cuz they are 7" wide, they are the supra wheels like banzai joe has got! They also look good cuz they are in black to match the paintwork! (not that 13's dont look good mind you!)

Yesterday I went to RAW Engineering in Hereford (they make the striker kit cars that look like lotus sevens!) that I have been to many a times cuz they run 4AGE's in them and they have now developed the 20v/supercharged and now turbo charged 4AGE's in their kit cars, anyway I couldn't believe my eyes when I turned up and there was an AE86 in the w/shop (Import cuz it had a square rear no. Plate and different rear lights etc) so naturally I asked about it and they said it belonged to REDLINE Magazine! It was white and black, seriously low, stripped out with a cage and buckets, 13x7 Superlites and it looked sweet! Plus it had drifting stickers on it! Banzai Joe has got some competition I feel!

Where have you gone banzaijoe? Whats going on with the AE86!??

Posted

Sorry guys, thanks for missing me!

I've been away for a few days up in Scotland, hosting a show up at Crail and getting a few feature cars along the way.

Right, guess you're wanting to know how the AE86 is getting along...

Well, first of all, I've had a Clifford Cat1 alarm system fitted. Gotta keep my baby within my possession...

The Celica Supra alloys are off to Fat Wheels for refurbishing this afternoon. Going to get them powdercoated graphite (to match the lower half of the body) with a polished face. Whether that's completely original or not, I'm unsure, but I think it will look good.

The other major thing that's happened is that I got the car serviced to keep the original service book stamped up-to-date. You may or may not approve of this but I took the car to my local Toyota dealer, mainly to enhance the car's original spec. They were REALLY eager to work on the car, and pulled up all the original servicing schedules on their computer. They even dropped their hourly rate too. It was overdue for its 24k-mile (major) service, so everything was changed: engine oil, LSD oil, gearbox oil, coolant, brake fluid etc. Didn't half need it. For example, the brake fluid was practically half water!

The technician pointed out a few parts which needed changing. Unsurprisingly, all the suspension bushes could do with replacing, including the one at the end of the Panhard rod. Grease is also escaping from the track rod ends. Nothing major, though. Some of the parts are now on order, the rest will be uprated aftermarket bits.

All told, the service took about four hours. Only original Toyota parts were used, and the grand total came to £285, which I didn't think was too bad. As I said, you may disagree with me on that point, but I'd like to hear your views.

Look out for the next couple of issues where all of these points will be explained fully.

Is this ae86 going to be for sale at any stage?????

Posted

If it did go up for sale u would need a bid load of cash!!!

Posted

theres always the option of a loan, id pay a nice few quid for a minter hopefully gettin one in the comming months

Posted

Well it won't be up for sale in the near future – I've been after an AE86 for ages. But I will be moving home at some point and my next place may not have enough room for two cars...

On the point of price, I've literally just got off the phone to my insurance company, and they've told me to increase the agreed value from £3500 to £4000. Yippee!

i recently had a similar decision to make - my car's got full toyota hist from the supplying dealer (every 5000 miles) apart from about 4 stamps scattered throughout (not bad for 93k!), so i wanted to take it to toyota to get it's "a" service done. however, lack of funds sort of decided against it for me so it went to Prestige & Performance - at least they're kind of specialists!

i might drive around a few dealers though, after what you said about them being keen to work on your car (although i can't see mine getting the same reaction, tbh :D ). still, it'll be interesting, as the next service is a big one

Toyota isn't a bad place to go as such, but bear in mind that most will have never even seen an AE86, let alone be experienced working on them. Getting it done is money well spent though.

You should have let me service her! I would have given her proper love and affection for absolutely minimal price since it would be an absolute pleasure to work on. Do as much as you can yourself though since the 86 is a really easy car to work on.

The wheels sound class. How much do they charge for refurbs? I have a polished set and a pikey spray-canned matt black set but wouldn't mind a professionally done set as well at some point, though mine are actually pretty good.

The main thing to keep an eye on is the oil pump. If possible and not too expensive get that checked and changed every so often. When your redlining at 7500 its not good if your oil pump decides to take a break. Was a lovely burgany coupe in sligo(owned by davey) left her running to warm-up and returned to a blown engine with a ****** oil pump

Posted

No offence potato but what on earth are you on about! Why would you change an oil pump every so often! They just dont break! If your pump was on the way out you would first notice a drop in oil pressure!

I work for Toyota and i have never changed a single oil pump! Just keep the oil changes regular!

Posted

About getting your alloys refurbished, it's probably best to give Fat Wheels (01795 585111) a call for a quote. The price depends on what finish you're after (polished, chrome-effect, painted, powder-coated etc), but a basic refurb of a single-piece alloy costs about £35. Split-rim refurbs start from about £80.

Posted

sorry, didn't mean it in that way, but i have heard of one or two oil pumps going, probably the owners fault for driving with a lack of oil in the engine, they wouldnt be the kindest to their cars!

Posted

Thats ok, i didnt mean for my reply to sound *****'ey!

These forums are way too sensitive on the swear words all i said was bum in a different way!
