Window Tinting

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Not looking to discuss legal requirements etc as I understand all that. Window tinting on the Auris, is it easy to DIY or should I just stop being a cheapskate and cough up the £140 to get all the glass rear of the B pillar tinted?

Thanks in advance.

If you have done it before and have good quality kit then there is nothing wrong with DYI. If you have no idea about how to do it then speak to soemone who does or you will be doing it twice.

Ive seen some awful "first time" jobs done, all bubbles and wrinkles

Call the professionals is my advice if you have not done it before

I agree, I've seen some pretty horrible attempts, and would very much like to avoid it looking like a train wreck!

You should have bought the SR mate.

You seem to be spending loads on yours trying to get the SR looks and performance!

I needed a car desperately when my Renault started to die (it practically fell apart at the Toyota Garage!) and the TR is what they had (the SR was a good 2k more for a car that had done twice the mileage). I got a good price on the TR too so I can spend the savings on getting a little closer to the SR without the insurance costs and have money to spare... plus I enjoy building a car up, makes it more mine ;)

Besides they say that replicating is the highest form of flattery... you should be flattered :P

Not being a pain BUT do not forget to tell your insurers of the mods, saves any heartache later if you need to make a claim.

My advice would be to go professional. It's probably the best £150 I've spent on my HSD (actually, it's the only £150 I've spent, but hey...). The guys that did mine did such a job, it looks like an original factory install, they do mobile but they prefer to do the work in their workshop as it's a controlled atmosphere - no dust floating about to get under the film. It is a very valid point which I am aware of. I declare all modifications to my insurers, including the cruise control, chip and wind deflectors fitted, all which have only added £10 a year :D

Was thinking of this for when i have my baby just getting the rears done not a fan of the silly stick on covers that you forget are there and rip off when you open the rear window!

Sorry to highjack but anyone know of any good tinters in the midlands?

Plus there is nowt wrong with getting a TR and making it into a SR saves monies thats my view! (yes im a tight *****!)

Crasstoe how far you going to take it wind deflectors! Really does your insurance company really care?

"Really does your insurance company really care? "

Probably not until you have to make a claim. Then they'll have a nice "get out" with the modification to standard model(if the assessor spots the change) and refuse that claim. Then possibly cancel your policy for not informing them of any alterations!

Yes they do! It was an additional £2 a year for the defletors, so a small price to pay for keeping it 100% legal.

I've very nearly had a payout witheld because I fitted a spoiler to an old car which I didnt declare... so I would rather pay my £2 and save the headache should I come to claim again.

Andy to answer your question I used google and here is a list of some in the Warwickshire area;

Thanks for that fella. Nice link.

I never really been in this postion to be honest.

My first car was a shed and i could not really to afford to declare upgrades, let alone the insurance it's self. Every car since then had been VERY heavily modified, and i used to have a list on my laptop that i sent evey year, but they always sent a letter with a small box on it which i always wrote see attched sheet!

I will have to keep that in mind when i put my bits on. Anyone know if winter tyres are an issue? Hope not!

My old Renault was heavily modified and I found Adrian Flux were the easiest to go with (they actually read the list of changes) so I know your pain. AFAIK Tyres are consumables so as long as they are E Marked for road use they dont care what they are.

Was thinking that. Will check none the less got a few things going on my car by then.

The first year with Adrian Flux they would not take a written sheetso they sent me three sheets to fil which was easlily done! Saying that dont miss the long conversation when i used to get a renewal! stopped bothering after a couple of years!

You could always get a roll of tint off eBay and give it a go. Loads of vids on youtube on how to do it. I did the rear side windows on a friends corolla. Not perfect, but did the job. At worst it will only cost you a tenner or so. The back window is a b**** because you need a heat gun to form the film to the curve of the window.
