Wheel Size Advice Please ?

Right after much deliberation I am going to buy 4 of the replica wheels by WSP the Catnias ..Link....

http://www.performancealloys.com/wheel-details.aspx?ID=1757

My question is over size .. Now due to My Wife's problems ride comfort is a major factor, So instead of getting four 18 inch I'm considering dropping down to 17s... But I don't want to turn the car into a wallowy heap !!

Will dropping down one inch make any real difference ??

If I go down one inch on the rim what tyre size would I need to retain the same rolling radius ?

Tyres will almost certainly be Yokohama Advans on the recommendations of Big Kev..

Suggestions please .............Thanks !

Wee Charlie.

Standard RAV wheels ? 225/65/17?

I thought the rest of the car is the same...

Far from an expert on the subject, just thought I'd start with a pointer....

Just use the calculator section to put in the size of current wheel and tyre that you have Charlie. Then input new wheel size and play around with tyre size to get nearest match to original - don't worry about inputing your vehicle at the top

If I recall correctly, the OEM T180s are 235/55/R18?

You want R17s within 3% of the OEM's rolling circumference, so:

Tyre code Diameter Circumference Difference

---------- -------- ------------- ----------

265/50 R17 697 mm 2190 mm -2.64 %

245/55 R17 701 mm 2202 mm -2.01 %

255/55 R17 712 mm 2237 mm -0.48 %

265/55 R17 723 mm 2271 mm 1.06 %

225/60 R17 702 mm 2205 mm -1.94 %

235/60 R17 714 mm 2243 mm -0.27 %

245/60 R17 726 mm 2281 mm 1.41 %

205/65 R17 698 mm 2193 mm -2.43 %

215/65 R17 711 mm 2234 mm -0.61 %

225/65 R17 724 mm 2275 mm 1.2 %

205/70 R17 719 mm 2259 mm 0.43 %

215/70 R17 733 mm 2303 mm 2.39 %

If you are looking for winter use, go for the narrower width/ higher profile (load and speed ratings permitting of course).

Edit: didn't BlueVortex have 17" rims for his winter tyres? See what size of tyres he used?

Charlie....why not stay on 18" rims, but increase the wall profile from 55 to 60....?

I would never claim to be an expert in wheel/tyre combos, but having changed wife's 17" tyres from 55's to 60's transformed the way it rides the bumps on our under-funded roads here in Scotland....or am I missing your point?...why go down to a smaller rim at all....? Sorry if being a bit non-thin.

Where's that well known rubber fetishist, Marsky, when you need him....?

If you want a visual/trial at the Hokoyama tyres, just shout, Charlie.

Big Kev

He musta been typing his at same time as me...!!!! Editation.

tation.

Aha.

What BK says would be a more sensible idea :yahoo:

Go away from the Bridgestones, get a comfier higher profile tyre and you will probably have a better ride.

And it means you can swap'n'switch easier with your existing 18" OEM wheels if-and-when you need to.

Aye. My point was that I thought that most of 180 is the same as the rest of the range, say, an XTR / XT4. ("standard RAV"). [Like chassis, suspension, even speedo?] Etc... And you said you wanted to drop to 17" rims. Hence my suggestion that standard 17" RAV wheel sizes may be suitable...

Nevermind. Dave's calculator is a better idea anyways... typed it at the same time...

My car is the T180, but not run with 18" wheels.

I have wheels 17" (original Toyota XT5)

My tyres size: 225x65x17 Continental CrossContact Winter. Soft and quiet. No.1 tyre

Only 1,2% different in comparison with original T180 wheels.

Be careful in keeping the same rim size but changing the aspect ratio. Marsky has it right, you need to keep the same rolling radius because if you increase it you will reduce the brake performance.

All wrong - go for ultra thin tyres ratio and fit some decent seats - the T ones are poor. Or buy a gel pad (I can get them at cost) normally used for wheelchair users.

Even make yer own gel pad by mixing some tangerine jelly up but at a far denser water/crystal ratio.

Aw Great, Anchs....now you're giving her outdoors the ammunition of reduced braking...."that'll be why ah reversed into neighbour across road's car, then....?" Naw Hen...ye were blabberin' too much t'passenger.

Now....where's ma pins and ma Anchorman dolly...?

Also your speedo will read incorrectly.

Not entirely relevant, Bob....she takes a calculator with her, and adds up the speed restriction signs at left and right of road she is travelling on, and does that speed.....how I hate 70mph signs...!!!!

I get to be forum pedant, they don't make 70MPH signs! :toast:

Actually they are going to raise the motorway limit to 80MPH in 2013, which is good, but really they should allow passing on the left like in America to greatly reduce traffic caused by middle lane morons who block the flow by refusing to keep left.

So that's where she gets it from....? She sees a white sign with a black diagonal band through it, thinks the speed limit has been scored out, so goes as fast as she wants....?

Thanks All !! So it seems the best idea is just to change the profile to 60% ?? That will be the way forward I think as it will keep the appearance the same which I like . Plus a tangible improvement in ride ??Am I reading this right ??? BUT with a very slight reduction in braking ? Would in the real world this even be noticeable ??

Kev I may have to give You a ring just to clarify ... I had no idea You had changed the profile I thought You had changed like for like !!

Please point out Guys if I am reading this right as I am in the Midlands and am about to order the wheels as here is where I will have them delivered to as My Tyre supplier is here !.. Thanks

sorry to be a killjoy but in Possilpark, they have 70mph signs next to the schools. It was meant to be 20 but the local official can't write. Shame.

If you are sticking with the R18 rims, and you want a higher profile, and you want to keep the rolling circumference within 3%, you can go for the following:

Tyre code Diameter Circumference Difference

---------- -------- ------------- ----------

205/60 R18 703 mm 2209 mm -1.75 %

215/60 R18 715 mm 2246 mm -0.07 %

225/60 R18 727 mm 2284 mm 1.61 %

205/65 R18 724 mm 2275 mm 1.12 %

215/65 R18 737 mm 2315 mm 2.93 %
