Avensis Gearbox - Whihc Ones?

Hi all,

Looks like the gearbox has failed on my 2001 1.6 GLS Avensis, what gearbox will fit on? i.e. the one from the 1.8 / 2.0 etc?

Going to be looking for a reclaimed one so obviously want as many options as I can

The original transmission code is on the car's VIN plate.

If yours is the 1.8VVTI, then you can also use the gearbox from the celica 1.8VVTI.

early models were 5 speed, but the later 1.8VVTI also came with a 6 speed box.

I know which one I would go for if I was you ;)

The 1.8VVTI Celica's came with exactly the same engine and gearbox as your Avensis.

I would rather stick with an original 5 speed gearbox for your car. I may be wrong but, I heard that it may be classed as a modification by insurance if you fit the 6 speed. Just check to be sure.

It has been done before and if I remember correctly, the 6 speed ratios are closer to each other but 6th is slightly higher than 5th of a 5 speed 'box. Also does your 1.6 have the torque to pull the longer gear? You will be changing down on every motorway incline and to accelerate.

I think 1.8 is the same as your 1.6 gearbox.
