Best Sri Or Cai For An 1Zzfe

Hi all. I own a toyota corolla which used to be 1.4 liters (i.e. the 4zzfe engine) but I have oversized it to 1.8 litters by using all the internal parts (crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons) plus the intake manifold and throttle body from the 1zzfe engine. I only kept my engine block, oil sump and header.

So basically I have an 1zzfe engine under the bonnet now. More description, info and dyno test can be found on my signature.

My question is, what is the best CAI or SRI for the 1zz engine. I want to add some more power but not lose torque at low ends etc.

I would appreciate to hear the opinions/experiences of people who have actually tried on something and not assumptions like "I heard that my cousins brother's sister in law son has used a KN filter and he is happy with it.

For the record I have just a K&N panel in the filter box now.

Any syggestions will be very much appreciated.

Thank you!

Your best bet would be to keep the standard airbox & performance panel filter. Basically it is more resistant to heat soak than a SRI or CAI. That is assuming the cone of the SRI/CAI will sit in the engine bay & not in a wheel arch.

So you believe that it's better to keep the air filter box than to get a Short Ram Intake...

To be honest, I don't want to install a cold air intake because it would be very dificult to take the cone filter out every time I would want to wash it.

What if I install a SRI but direct cold air to it some way...?

On the VVTi, you are more likely to lose power with a Short Ram than gain any. Bogging can also be an issue, in fact, the only benefit is noise.

Sorry to say it, but look to spend your cash on something else :)

To run an SRI with a cold air feed, you'd need the filter encased in a heat resistant sheild & the cold feed connected directly onto it in order for it to out perform the standard box & performance filter.

Look at it this way. If CAI or SRI were that great, all cars would be fitted with them as they would be cheaper to produce than an airbox and filter to match.

Ok got it... Better spend money on reprogramming the ECU, as I am still running on the 4zz ECU program...

Thank you for your replies!

Unless you have an aftermarket ECU, you CANNOT remap the stock ECU. You can't run a piggy back either, as the stock ECU will overwrite it after a sort period of time.

So to go aftermarket ECU, you need an Apexi or AEM. Which means you'll need £1.5k-2k to buy, fit & tune it properly.

Almost right...

I have a Bosch ECU, and Bosch can be reprogrammed very very easily.

The thing you are saying only happens if you have a DENSO ECU...

Well I didn't know that. I'm just going by what I know from the Celica 140 & 190 engines.
