Hi there

About to become an Aygo owner - collecting our 06 5door Sport on Saturday replacing our 1.2 Punto.

Primary reason to buy this car is driven by the need to have mobility at the lowest reasonable cost. Our 17 yr old son is a named driver and the Group one insurance deal ensures we are paying a premium which is around 35% less than any of the 1.2 litre Punto/Fiesta/Corsa/206 types - Thats around £375 - worth having. Even better when he's 18 !!

RFL at £20 versus £120 for our Punto

MPG.....well lets see about that with the Aygo. Our 1.2 Punto returns 37 mpg as our car usage is 75% 2-6 mile urban trips with lots of traffic lights. My research on the Aygo points to an equivalent return of say 46 mpg??? but with light pedal work and kindly braking we may achieve 50 ?

If we make say 48 mpg thats £372 per year in OUR bank account - not the local Morrisons. So taking into account the future service costs on the Punto our switch to the Aygo will allow us to pocket well over £1000 over the next 12 months for exactly the same mobility.

Guess i'm preaching to the converted of course but when we REALLY analysed our car utility, there is no justification for a car larger than the Aygo both physically and in engine power terms. Several varied test drives with 3 adults on board around local hills were impressive.

For long journeys with luggage and trips to the tip our Vectra will do nicely.

Will let you know how we get on with it....corroded wheel bolts and all !!

Welcome to the club. You're right about the costs, I've got a lead right foot but still get 45 mpg round town, 63 on a long run at 70mph (ish). My favourite bit is taxing the car, £20 for a year is a bargain.

Welcome to the club Bravo, I bought my daughter a 2006 Aygo Sport two years ago and have been more than pleased with it, bottom group for insurance, £20 a year road tax and 50 plus mpg. We have the 3 door with MMT gearbox, its a fun little car , I find myself driving it whenever i get the chance , conveniently it seem to need petrol when i want to use it !! :)

On day 3 of Aygo ownership and mightily impressed with the car. It feels very well built, the cabin is good quality, the steering is surprisingly heavy for a small car but this suits me fine as opposed to the excessively light feel so common these days. It rides along our pothole strewn town with quiet, sold progress with few if any rattles of shakes. I think it rides better than our Vectra. The sound system is much better than expected too!

Only 45 miles into the first full tank of fuel so news news yet on calculated mpg.

Still loving the car but concerned over my first MPG calculation.

I filled the tank to the second click - 6 bars on the guage - set trip

After 225 miles filled again to second click - it took 27.6 Litres (6.2 Gallons) !!! Thats 36.3 MPG. OK - It was all urban driving but OMG that is a cause for concern.

Also the guage was displaying 3 bars before the fill up so it clear that is NOT to be relied upon!

I'm now on the second full tank and so far its run for 302 miles with 3 bars displayed but this was 75% motorway cruising on Saturday at 60-65 MPH.

Will keep you informed about the second measured MPG reading.......

Clicks on pumps aren't reliable either.

The only way to get a somewhat decent readout is to fill up the neck too,

so you can SEE the gas level off at some steady point in the filler neck.

And preferably fill up at the same station at the same pump too...

Yeah the blobs are not reliable, but the first 3 do seem to take a lot longer to use than the last 3. i can often get 350-370 miles out of the first 3 blobs, but only 70-100 out of the last 3. But when the last blob flashes and the car starts beeping fill it up!

Thanks for the comments ref wayward fuel contents indicator !!

OK I've just done the second fuel calculation after another 318 miles. This time its 49.9 MPG. Considering 80% of this was motorway cruising at 65-70 mph this is a poor figure. If after the next "urban" tankful the MPG remains at low levels I'm returning the car to the Toyota dealer for investigation.

Has anyone done similar? Is there any history of faults with the Aygo engine management system which can result in low MPG ?

Have you checked all the tyres are at the right pressure? it does make a fair amount of difference. Having a small engine means you might have to slightly adjust how you drive, but 49.9 isn't that bad. If you stayed at around 60MPH you also get much better fuel figures than at 70MPH.

Plus you might just need time to get used to the Aygo.
