2001 D4D Aux Drive Belt Noise

Hi all. My 2001 D4D 2 litre is suffering from what seems to be a common ailment as per this forum in that the aux belt is squealing in damp or cold weather and sounds like a banshee coming down the road!

These models have two aux belts. One drives the power steering and air con compressor, the other is for the alternator. The problem with my car is the air con/power steering belt.

I've had a good look for posts about how to change this belt, but all seem to be for the petrol engine which has a different tensioner.

Does anybody know how the tensioner on the D4D engine works? The idler pulley has a threaded manual adjuster behind it and I assume you have to slacken that off to remove and replace the belt. Having tried to do this, I must be missing something as the belt tension hasn't changed no matter which way I turn the adjuster. has anyone replaced this type of belt? Many thanks. TRB

Hi

I know exactly what you mean...i sold my 2001 Avensis 1.8 SR petrol last year...i expeienced the same problem...changed the belt which was pretty simple...made no difference...so i sprayed some belt slip on it...worked okay at first...and then back to normal...basically i kept spraying belt slip to deal with the problem...but i think the real problem was the tensioner pulley had gone...As this was one of my mannnnnnnnny problems with the car i got rid eventhough i only had her 10 months but she was in amazing condition though!and looked as good as new! I must say that i have always loved the look of that Avensis...dont know what it is about them...maybe its because you get a lot of car for what you pay for them...i dun know!

Sammy

Hello you have to slacken the bolt through the tensioner pulley then you can adjust the belt. When required tension is gained just tighten the pulley bolt up and that locks it in place. Hope this helps.

Thanks Andrew. I was reluctant to loosen the tensioner pulley bolt as I thought it might just retain the pulley rather than allowing it to move. I'll give it a go at the weekend. Cheers. TRB
