If I'm right, on top of the air filter case. Where that black connector with the colored wiring is. I've checked mine, it seemed to be clean.

Ok mate i will thanx. To be honest looking at these reviews on the 2.2 engines im not so this was a good buy ref the engine head gaskets just hope it doesnt happen to me. wish I knew the percentage of the number made to the percentage actually having replacement engines. Ive read a lot about 3/4 engine replacement do they mean from pistons upwards? Also do you know if the replacement engine has had this problem rectified or do they just fit a new engine and keep fingers crossed.

Ormi is the man in the know as he is a fully qualified Toyota Technician.

He seems to be repairing these faster than Toyota sold them, so I'd imagine they are quite prone to HG failure, but on the bright side the engine gets replaced with revised parts, so you could end up with a better/newer/ more reliable engine free of charge! Not many manufacturers would do that, so don't worry too much.

Thanks for the info mate I just tried looking up ormi in the members list but couldnt find him. But great info I shall keep an eye on the water level and temp gauge. Ive had the car approx 4wks now with 31000 on it and its been 1 owner near immaculte so I had a look at history and its had its 2 services done at toyota hedge end southampton so im confident that there would be no argueing if the engine went wrong. Its just so annoying because the car is on a 57 plate which means its now 4 yrs old and from what ive heard on here toyota will only warranty 7yrs old or 110000 miles but to be honest i wanted to keep this car for at least the next 5 years as all they seem to make these days is tiny engines to keep emmisions down and to be honest Im not a great beleveir in small engines with high bhp I like a good sized engine with plenty of torque and not thrash the hell out of them so to be honest I might now have to get rid of this T180 in the next 3 years as the warranty would of expired on the 7yr. The way I look at it the engine should be recalled then no problem. I know its the head gasket that goes wrong but do you know exactley what goes wrong with the gasket apart from just blowing? Sorry to ask so many questions but you seem to know what your on about. Gaz

Has your car had 2 Toyota services in the last 4 years and 2 other services, or just 2 services?

This could be a problem for you if it has only had 2 services.

Mine is only on 30k but due its 4th service due to the previous owner only managing 6k a year, so i got an immaculate car at a good price, but the service intervals are now based on an annual basis rather than the mileage.

I don't know the full details of the damage done, but Ormi has posted up plenty of pics of a stripped down engine and explanations of what has happened.

Try not to worry too much about possible problems as you may not have any issues at all, but keep on eye on your oils and lubes so you can spot any potential problems before they happen.

Yer the MAF is the black box on top of the air filter box. You can get some electrical contact spray to clean it or get a dedicated can of "CRC" off eBay for about £10. Thats what I used to clean mine on my T180
