Time For Winter Tyres Again

Could someone tell me if you can get winter tyres that are rated as being LRR? I just had a quote for 5 different tyres but none have the LRR on the print out, all say "PTH" but I don not know what that refers to.

I'm trying to find this out from Yokohama at the moment, I'm not sure, by the very nature of a winter tyre providing more grip in the cold, I somehow doubt that any WINTER tyre will be LRR, due to the surface it will be operating on

That's what I was thinking. The ER300 Ecopias I have on at the moment are summer tyres - which explans why they were totally shocking in the snow last year!

Have a look at Michelin Alpin A4. They are LRR winter tyres.

Used them on my gen3 T3 last year.

The Michelin is one the tyres on my quote list, it is the Alpin A4 GRNX, is this the same tyre you used?

Yes. That is the one.

The GRNX is Michelin's mark for low rolling resistance.

From their website...

"ENERGY EFFICIENCY

The presence of the GREEN X marking on the wall of a MICHELIN tyre is the guarantee of one of the best energy efficiency levels on the market. You reduce your fuel consumption (5) and your CO2 emissions while benefiting from MICHELIN performances in terms of life span and safety."

They also have the snowflake symbol for winter use (handy if you visit Germany).

It may seem strange but LRR Winter tyres do exist.

The Michelin Alpin A4 I mentioned for one.

Continental also do them but they were not available in the UK last year (only mainland Europe).

Just checked all of my stocks. We have Yokohama W-Drive V902A tyres in, none of them have the Green X, so NO is the answer from me

Toyota have struck a deal with Yokohama so my stocks are limited to the V902A's

Well from the tyres the garage quoted me I decided on the Michelin A4 and went to order them only to be told that they can't get them, not sure what the point of giving me a quote in the first place for them, it's not really an option to come to the UK and get some so I'll have to look around locally again for the Michelin, that's assuming there isn't some stock problem with this tyre.

Just come back from another garage, I wanted to order winter tyres together with some steel wheel's, when the guy realised it was a Auris Hybrid he immediately said he would have to check but didn't think steel wheel's were allowed, after some checking he confirmed he couldn't supply steel wheel's for my Auris, maybe this is known to others here but I hadn't thought about this being a problem, maybe it isn't a problem in the UK? The first garage I tried didn't mention that steel wheel's should not be put on the Auris.

Last year I had to ring around. Nobody had them in stock but most could get them in in 1 or 2 days. Have you checked mytyres.co.uk (or possibly blackcircles.co.uk?).

Does anyone have any thoughts, please about road noise, ride and fuel consumption on winter tyres for the Gen3 T Spirit compared to summer rubbers?

If your Gen3 Tspirit has the 17 inch wheels, you will have a job finding winter tyres. They were as rare as hens teeth last year. You might want to look into getting some 16 inch steel rims with winter tyres.

If your Gen3 Tspirit has the 15 inch wheels, you have a pretty good choice of winter tyres and some of them are also low rolling resistance. My Alpin A4s managed an average of 54mpg over 8000 miles last winter. Road noise and handling was so good I switched to Michelin energy savers for the summer.

I did mention it wasn't an option to come to the UK to buy tyres, I just have to check a few more garages here.
