Hi,

I've just registered, so hi everybody. I am looking to buy an Aygo and am interested in the ice. I've never bought a car in the UK before, so I was just wondering what the dealerships were like in this country. Is it likely to be a hard sell approach? I keep seeing that you can haggle, but I'm not really sure how much off of the sticker price would be considered good? Do they throw in freebies? Or try to add hidden costs on at the end? Does anybody have any advice for me? (I would be paying cash, as I've got a personal loan.)

Thanks!

Yes you can haggle.

Have a look at the equivalent car on Broadspeed.com and start just under that price.

Don't just use one dealer. If you have no part exchange you can deal over the phone with any franchise.

The extras they love to sell are GAP insurance and Supaguard. They make commission off these.

be careful when they offer ypu 'extras' they told me they added in this and that and lots of other stuff and i see the costs of it all in the breakdown...dont get me wrong they did me a great deal but not telling me the extras they chucked in would mean me paying for them, and theyre extras i didnt ask for like leather car care kit at £190, car mats at £40, stuff like that :) just make sure before u agree to anything u get a cost breakdown and take off anything u dnt want :D

Thanks guys! I'll try to get my hard nosed bargining hat on. (Doesn't come naturally to me I'm afraid!) :/

Maybe you could take a knowledgeable friend along with you to inspire confidence and make sure that the dealer does not take advantage of your good nature

If you have the cash also try drivethedeal. Our Toyota dealer couldn't get anywhere near the price we paid for ours through DTD. Agreed about Toyota dealers adding lots of extras to the price - it's a underhand practice which put me off dealing with them for our purchase.

Through DTD a 3 door manual ice is £8095 (£8,167 at Broadspeed), saving £1760 on list, a 5 door £8,413, saving £1,796.

I've also just out of interest looked at our car. We bought it almost 5 years ago when the current list was £7,900, we paid £7,000 for it. The current list is now £10,055 (gulp!), yet DTD will still do it for £8,316. This shows there is plenty of opportunity for a deep discount at a main dealer.

I'd turn up with a DTD print out at a main dealer and say "price match this please", if they won't simply walk and order it through DTD. No need for hard sales as you have set your stall out from stage 1.

I used to be good at haggling with dealers but not in recent years - not sure if it is me getting older or perhaps the dealers that used to give the best deals have gone bust!

If I didn't have a car to part exchange I would definitely use the internet sites suggested - or at least expect a dealer to get very close to the best quote obtained.

I bought my Aygo Go! with air conditioning last month and got £1000 knocked off the list price from local Toyota dealers.

Good luck

I wouldn't pay more than 9K for a top of the range Aygo. Got my Black with Aircon and Spoiler intrest free for that. In this climate you should be able to knock up to 2K off list. Remember, your not their to make a friend so tell them to cut the chat and give you a price. Good luck :-)

Nobody could sell me any extras or add ons. If I wanted something (in the first place) I would get it but if not, they would have an impossible job to persuade me to buy it :D

Thanks for all the advice. I'm feeling more prepared now. I test drove one yesterday and am off to look at some pre-reg ones today. Seems like that might be a good way to get a good deal too.

Fingers crossed!

Sorry but I now reckon that the Aygo is well overpriced for what it is.
