Fitting A Rear Door With Wheel Holder

Having sourced a set of new wheels for the rav I now have a spare wheel. I can sometimes make space for it in the back of the car but sometimes this is not going to be an option..

So I am looking at buying a complete rear door assembly from a front end crashed car that has the wheel carrier. The car is a 2006 4.3 model the same as My car. It will come complete with rear wiper glass and all the bits and bobs still in place all I will have to do is get it fitted and painted to match My car....

Question is..... Is it possible to fit a wheel carrier to My existing rear door ??

I have to ask this as storing the old rear door for when I sell the car will be a flipping nightmare !!

I can of course just carry a wheel repair kit but I feel that these are next to useless .....

Thanks.

Wee Charlie.

Not answering your question, but regarding the repair kit;

I thought the same as you until I had to use it. However when needed it worked fine, no issues at all in fact, it got me going again and a day or so later I took the car to the garage and although the tyre was repairable (no issues with it being full of gunk!) I decided to put a new tyre on as the tread was quite low (about 2mm). It now doesn't worry me at all about not carrying a spare (unless I was right up north in those highlands!)

If you change the door you will also have to change the rear bumper. As for fitting a carrier to your existing door, I imagine it would need strengthening and would protrude quite a bit. Quite likely to end up a right Horlicks

What about on the bonnet Safari style?

A good alternative to the 'gunk' repair kit is the 'string' type plugging systems.

We use the string fixing for our JCB - one tyre now has 24 fixed punctures in it - OK we're not going fast, but it does carry almost 2 tons regularly, and it weighs 3.5 tons itself.

On the wheel on the door system, the major problem will be whether yer door hinges will hold up. The car is already struggling to cope with extra doors, and the bodyshell will bend in the middle with a wheel hung on the back. Then the hinges on the back door will be ripped off at the first bump.

The spare wheel on the back will quickly turn black from the soot swirling around the back door from yer oil-burning lump. Mind you, you could paint the car black like DJRav did.

Have fun

Please explain about this string fix kit ?? I've never heard of it !!

Can the Runflats be repaired with this kit ??

I have a set on the car of the original wheels and tyres fitted with the runflats which I intend to run through the summer months and use one of the other set as a spare..

Through the Winter I will have a set of

These

Shod with these.

In the summer I will use the original wheels with the runflats and carry one of the winter set as the spare ..

David .. Is the rear bumper on the T180 different to the other cars of the same Year ???

Charlie

Don't go fixing your T180 with JCB repairs.

The bumper from any vehicle with a spare wheel will do. Look in your manual, you will see the different back door configurations.

Here's one version:LINK

Here's another:LINK

Here's how they are fitted:

The rear bumper differs depending on the wheel being on the door or not. That's why there are two slightly different bumper scuff cover shapes.

If you notice, the number plate on the bare door is in the centre of the door. With a wheel on the door the plate is on the bumper.

Thanks Don. I will look in the manual when I get back up the road home tomorrow. Ive been in the Midlands for the last two weeks..

I am going to do this conversion. I will retain the original rear door and pack it very carefully as I wont buy a car unless its totally original so would not expect some one else to buy the car from Me if its not the same. This is why I'm keeping the original wheels as they are and getting a new set...

This is the first car I've ever really played around with !! ..... Normally I buy drive then sell ...

When I was heavily into Bikes I spent an absolute fortune on them !! Modding them was like a sort of obsession .. But cars ? Nah.

Thanks. Now You mention it yes I see Your point about the siteing of the plate and remember the different scuff plates..

I wonder though will the new rear door open and function with the old bumper ? I will likely change it anyway as I don't think it will add that much to the cost of the job...Could fit some park sensors at the same time ..

My Missus has just twigged what I'm up to now as She calls it . She says how is She going to open the rear door with great big wheel on it .... I should explain that Due to a very serious back injury the Wife cannot lift anything at all ... Not even a chicken or stuff out of the oven... So She says if I put a ruddy great big wheel on the back door She wont be able to go shopping !!!!!

Result !!!......................... :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

Not really Charlie. Unless you are facing really steep down hill, she will open it quite easily.

I considered doing this mod with my last motor and if I'm honest I wish I had done. I really miss that car and I prefer it to the current spec model.

Hello Charlie,

interesting mod, you can also keep your bumper and fit your reg plate to the OEM part in diag below.

Charlie, You ever in Edinburgh? You'd be welcome to take a shufty at mine (XT5 with wheel on the back) and see where the differencs are..

A key one to remember is the bumper has the number plate on it whereas yours is on the door. This might bu66er about with your tow bar install too...

Mate it is possible to retain the existing bumper. The towbar fitment is the same for all 4.3 models so No problems there... Thanks for the offer but there are two other ravs in Our road. 1 SR And 1 XT5 so a look is just across the road.. It seems though that the rear doors construction is completely different. The T180s door is much lighter and seems to be lacking a lot of the extra ironwork that supports the fairly heavy wheel ......
