Egr Valve

My brother in law's 57 Reg Avensis had a problem this week when the engine warning lights came on, on the second visit to the our local dealer they checked the oil level and told him he needs a new engine but luckily Toyota GB are going to pay for it. They told him the EGR valve has a design fault and has worn the bores.

His engine is the same as my 56 Rav4 2.2 D4D. I have read on the forum re issues with these engines head gaskets etc. My question is has anyone blanked off the ERG valve I have heard of this on other makes and am thinking about doing as my Rav has 85000 miles on it with only partial dealer service history so I don't think they will cover the engine if it fails. At present it is fine and uses no oil at all.

Cheers

David

David . Your engine will be covered so long as it has service history, It does not have to be all Dealer. Part Dealer and part independent garage will be fine just so long as it has been serviced ..

But as its running fine its not an issue ..

So long as the car has been regularly serviced to schedule and has covered less than 112K you should be covered. AFIK you do not need a full dealer service history. It is the regularity that counts. Wording on the TSB is, 'reasonably maintained' - see attached.

Personally I wouldn't blank off the EGR - you could end up masking a problem that would nornally merit a new engine.

It will run fine with the EGR blocked off but you should progress your claim for a new engine.

Don . The OP says His engine is fine . I think its a hypothetical question as to whether He can remove and blank the EGR as many owners of other makes seem to do ...

When I ran Transit vans for the business the later models used to go through EGR valves like there was no tomorrow !! It was the most talked about subject on the relevant Forums and most Members used to remove and blank them off.

As It was My policy to change every Van at its third birthday I used to simply let Ford replace them .. One Van went through 5 EGRs in 3 Years and 30K miles !!! Cleaning those valves was not an option...

Wee Charlie.

it might be a good idea to ring TGB. I did regarding my T180 to see if any mods or warranty work had been carried out. Just for peace of mind really. Anyway they told me it had new pistons and rings fitted, new head gasket, new front exhaust pipe due to the problems mentioned on here. Give em a ring and it will put you at ease OR put you on guard if the mods aint been carried out
