Wind Noise Solutions?

Recommended Posts

I have really really bad wind noise above 30mph coming from what appears to be the drivers side tweeter speaker area.

I have tried the IMOC solution - no improvement.

I have filled the damn thing with silicone stuff too - no improvement.

Could it be something else????

How many of you have similar probs and what have you done to sort it???

Cheers

Adam,

this is something I'm to look at shortly. In the meantime, one of my solutions has been to pack the area with kitchen roll. Seems to work as a temporary measure. Maybe cotton wool would be even better, fibre glass insulator perhaps....? I have some of this lying around. If I get chance I'll have a go with it this weekend and let you know how I get on.

Cheers,

Damien.

Right I've packed one side with as much fibre glass as I can realistcally get in there. I would say noise is down by around 50%. TBH I think some of it is comming in through the rubber seals around the bottom of the door windows. I think I might replace these come the summer.

Dame, i got a reduction slightly in noise but its not stopping it. Its the single most annoying thing about the car (apart from it pulling to the left all the time!) but if you let me know how you get on and what i should do then that would be great!

Cheers

Will do. I will have a close look at the problem sometime soon. At the moment, I find just increasing the stereo volume knob a bit works as an excellent temporary measure!

As for the car pulling to the left, sounds like it needs proper four wheel aligning. your local car specialist should be able to sort this for you. Alternatively, I've used Powerstation in Cheltneham (Gloucestershire) they do an excellent job for around £80. Expensive perhaps, but the difference is amazing and no more uneaven wearing tyres

Im totally ignorant to mechanics etc, but could it also be a problem with the suspension (shocks/springs) or is it more likely to be this alighnment??? is that similar to tracking etc???!!! cos i've just had that done!

Basically, the car slightly steers to the left and i have to keep constant pressure holding it on line - its not to say its a major problem but you can tell its there.

Suggestions???

Yes alignment and tracking are much the same thing, but on these cars you can also have the rear adjusted too. Did you get that done or just the front??

When your local KWIK BODGE type place does it they will only check the alignment of the front wheels relative to each other. When DAME says get the alignment checked he means get all 4 wheels checked together. Its a bit more specialised. Its possible you see that its the back wheels steering the car slightly left.

Absolutely. Having the wheels adjusted correctly is a time consuming process, it's not a 10 minute job. They spent around an hour doing mine at Powerstation. In fact if you look at the picture on the left, you can actually see it, I took this during my last alignment session.

Suspension problems are a possibility, especially if it's something like the springs/shoks have weakened on one side, and thus the car is uneaven on one side. However, these sorts of problems usually manifest themselves as vibration etc. through the steering column. Have a look at your tyre wear. Is the tread wearing down uneavenly on one side? If so, you are most likely looking at alignment problems.

could it possibly be due to the camber of the road??

have u tried it out on a flat piece of land??

Or if u happen to have ur own PRIVATE road drive in the middle or opposit e side to see what it does??

just an idea!!

Naa, its not camber. I think i will start with this full on 4 wheel alignment jobby. Then take it from there. Hopefully this may cure it.

Thanks for your help all - but any new suggestions on WIND NOISE!!!!

Only advice on wind noise is to try and listen and find out exactly where it's comming from, put your hand over certain areas until it stops. Then examine the areas, see if the seals etc. fit properly. It's a pain I know, but I think it will take some resolving - at least that's what I'm finding.....

wind noise has been starting to annoy me big time too !! I was doing 120mph on the way home ( 6.30am )... and the noise was VERY annoying. Havn't a clue where it was coming from either. Possibly the tweeters ?? I dunno.

Hey mate, try weld around your door glass man, all around the door too, that'll stop the wind noise problem I think!! Otherwise, try putting some ear plugs in your ears.

I still like the traditional solution - turn the stereo up :).
