How Does A 4.1 Auto Transfer Case Work?

Has anyone got any diagrams that explain how the transmission works on a 97 4.1 4x4 auto?

I have the downloaded repair manual, that is even more confusing than a Haynes.

I have studied the assembly diagrams, and got nowhere.

The transfer box has an oil pump, and valve work that doesn't seem to connect to anything, and a plain diff.

The auto trans has a front diff that is full of ferodo plates forming a clutch, so it looks like the front diff is lockable.

I have to admit I've no idea how the transfer works, Landrovers I understand Suzukis I understand, even the Honda CRV, but this is unfathomable.
