Hi,

Does anyone know how the parking brake operates on a 2009 Verso. Is there a drum with shoes intergrated with the disc or do the pads just operate on the disc. Also has anyone had a problem with rust forming on the face of inside of the disc Thanks

I would`ve thought the handbrake applies the pads to the discs.

Damp discs get surface rust overnight or even after washing the car.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply but I need to know for certain how the parking brake works as I have seen pictures of one on a Toyota where there is a drum integrated with the disc which has pads like a drum brake. The corrosion on the inside of the rear disc was pointed out at my last saervice and is more than just surface rust. Thanks

Ok Tony I get you, its looks like that particular brake isn`t working then, why didn`t the garage say what was the cause ?

I know the main dealer always put on the report form that my 15k mile Jags discs were corroded because it used to stand in my garage unused for weeks at a time.

Hi Dave,

There is in fact nothing wrong with the brake and like you my Verso also stands for long periods which could indeed be the cause of the corrosion. My only concern is as the Dealer knows of this corrosion will it be an MOT failure next july if the discs are not renewed. In actual fact the MOT test for the brakes is their efficiency and I do not think this will be affected

The Jags gone now but the dealer quoted me a price for changing the discs at its last service/mot but I told them only to change them if it failed the test because of them.

It didn`t because as you`ve suggested their efficiency wasn`t impaired.

Cheers Tony, no doubt my dealer will be telling me the same thing about my Verso because its standing idle most of the time now. (I`ve only done just over 5k in 18 mth )

I had a similar rear pad problem with a Volvo S70 which the dealer thought was due to the rear brakes not getting enough exercise (I'm a light-footed driver).

I found regularly doing a few hard stops in reverse (ideally downhill/with a load) avoided the problem. Of course if your corrosion is deep this won't help.
