Rav4 D4D Slow Starting

Hi,

I'm new to the site and wonder if anyone can help. I have a 2004 Rav d4d with 96k on the clock, full service history, bought it in June this year and it has always been slow to start. I have changed the glo plugs and checked they're getting power, added the injector cleaner to the fuel and am out of ideas. I'm no Mechanic but am an Engineer so should be able to understand the basics of what anyone on here has to say. Finally, once the car starts it runs absolutely fine, performs well and is very economical.

Would appreciate any help as the problem seems to be getting worse.

Welcome to the club and being from Derbyshire you immediately achieve executive status  (which part?)

Fuel filters can give awful cold starting problems so change that first but would you say it cranks quickly when starting from cold?

Hi Igor,

Thanks for the quick reply. The engine seems to turn over as quick as any diesel I've owned, and that's quite a few, just seems to take a lot of turning over until it fires up. It seems to help if I push the accelerator to the floor (only slightly helps)but even then it doesn't start like it should. Have also noticed that when it's low on fuel it seems harder to start, but could have imagined this as I have a van and sometimes the Toyota is standing in the garage for a few days unused. When it starts it runs perfectly which makes me think the problem is nothing too serious.

Any ideas?

Cheers, John

Hi Anchorman,

Ashover. I've seen on the net that the filter is in the tank and part of the fuel pump, making it a biggish job to drop the tank out. Is this the case?

I was thinking it was a fuel pump issue if not the fuel filter.I'd check these 2 issues 1st. And also try running some BG244 in the fuel. Do you use Shell V-Power derv? Worth a go.

= = = = =

1) The engine seems to turn over as quick as any diesel I've owned --- IT MEANS YOUR BOTH Battery AND STARTER ARE IN ORDER;

2) Just seems to take a lot of turning over until it fires up --- LACK OF TIMELY SIGNAL TO INJECTORS CONTROL SOLENOIDS OR FUEL FILTER IS CLOGGED DUE TO PARAFINE OR NORMAL MECHANICAL DIRTY

3) I push the accelerator to the floor (only slightly helps) --- THIS IS THE PROOF OF FUEL LACK OR SHORT AFTER THE PUMP--- REASON --> SCV OR FUEL FILTER CLOGGING

Conclusion -- it seems the issue is with fuel filter. Have it changed first and revert with outcome.

Cheers/Igor

Hi Igor,

Will do. Do you have to remove the tank to get at the fuel filter on this model? Seems a ridiculous place to put a serviceable part.

Hi,

I've tried injector cleaner, is this the same as BG244? What will using Shell V-Power diesel achieve? Sorry to sound thick!

Jon

The problem must be close to you -- just have fine fuel filter changed and have it correctly assembled to prevent an air suction thru a lid or so.

DO not touch tank now - just follow the above and come back

Hi,

Where is the 'fine filter'? I don't intend to touch it myself but can't see afilter anywhere.

Thanks for your very logical help by the way.

Regards,

BG244 is a fuel treatment like others to a point. But BG244 is the only one that I've used (And I've tried them all near enough) that really does do what it says on the tin. Try and google it and you'll see how it differs to the leading rivals like Forte treatments. Shell V-Power derv ( Semi-Synthetic diesel) has twice the additive package as normal diesel. by using this it will help to clean the system out. But if you've got a fuel filter problem its not going to help that much tbh. So 1st get that filter changed and see how you go.

do not do other job but those required Matey

firstly - you have to understand what goes wrong and what is going on in general.

these are normal issues arising from both millage and lack of scheduled service and bad diesel quality consumed.

read thru a pinned section where our GURUs have spent a lot of time to help other beginners drivers
