Tyre Prices - Why The Dramatic Increase?

Just been scouting my usual (French) websites for a pair of snow tyres and they've gone through the roof! Last year I got two Pirellis brand new for 230euro and now I'd get one for that and have just enough left for fitting it. I know there's lots of folk on here who've been looking at tyres recently so can you tell me if this is a temporary blip due to increased demand/shortage of stock at the moment or is this what we've got to look forward to now? The sites do seem to have much fewer tyres listed at the moment so I'm hoping it's just a stock shortage.

Thanks

Hi just for your interest, i made a quick enquiry with my local tyre shop (good pal go out on bikes etc so wont bull**** me)he said last week that a major tyre supplier had sold over 8000 snow tyres various sizes to the main area distributors up & down the country & within days they had almost gone, strikes me that the last 2 winters have caught out so many people that folks are planning ahead more than usual causing some hysteria,& as the laws of supply & demand dictate that up goes the price of goods+ vat is 20% now, less last winter............

World shortage of rubber.

Countries now making winter tyres mandatory.

Seasonal effect.

Folk scared of a repeat of last years snow.

Retailers promoting them more.

My Contis increased EUR 80 each in the space of a week last year.

Supply and demand I suppose.

I appreciate panic affecting the UK but am amazed it's in Europe where the market has probably been stable for years. I guess 8.000 tyres have to come from somewhere though, and fewer are probably being produced given the recessions etc. Rubber shortage I hadn't heard about, nor any new countries making snow tyres mandatory. All possible I suppose.

Comment about the Continentals suggests maybe a temporary fluctuation. Hope it calms down by mid-November at any rate...

Mandatory in Germany.

Wasn't just the Contis - they were all jumping up in price.

With mytyres and pneus online, they will be grabbing a large share of what's being produced.

And they don't produce winter tyres all year round, so October deliveries will be grabbed as soon as available.

Yes but haven't they been mandatory in Germany, Austria and probably some others for years, so that wouldn't be increasing demand more than usual? I never realised supply and demand affected tyres so much, that they'd just say 'out of stock please wait' like a television, not double in price. This is my third year buying them and I actually normally end up using Oponeo based in Poland not any of the pneu named sites or garages but even they've gone up. Guess I'll just have to wait a few weeks.

Me thinks its a case of supply and demand. The way the temprature as dropped all over Europe over the last 2 weeks and the UK factor built into the equation, it,s lets make a killing time for Tyre manufacturers!!!!!

Regards Clare

Have got mine fitted on Monday

Pulled this off a tyre suppliers website today -

PLEASE NOTE : EUROPEAN TYRE SHORTAGE Due to new EU legislation changing the grade of oil that must be used during the manufacture process of all European tyres there is currently a major shortage on all sizes, especially 4x4.

Hi all

You don't need winter tyres anyway unless your travelling abroad, went all over 'the tops' here in Huddersfield last winter without any problem.

Hi mike, as it is I live abroad, up a mountain, and they're pretty essential at times here if you don't want to faff around with chains and avoid those OH **** moments going down hill...

Just been back on one site and they don't have anything at all left in my size today. Off on holiday for a week so back to this in November I think!

Braking Accelerating Turning and control are all massively improved when using winter tyres in winter, Its not just a case of Well I can get there its also a case of how safe I can do the journey.. Just because We Rav Owners have 4WD it doesn't mean We can stop any quicker or turn any better than a 2WD vehicle.

Wee Charlie.
