Steel Wheels

After asking a garage to fit winter tyres onto some new steel wheels I was told you cannot put steel wheels on a hybrid car, well not my Auris Hybrid, does anyone have any opinions on this and if this is the case?

Interesting ?? - I presume you have 17" alloys - What about the 15" bog standard Auris spec wheels, surely they are steel?

Don't play with these cowboys from 'garages !!'

Where did you get the new steel [Auris] wheels from anyway? Don't they supply tyres as well?

Stop winding us up zetor, you’re just trying to resurrect last years nonsense re-winter tyres.

Yes I have 17" alloy's and thought I would have winter tyres put on some 15" wheels, the garage I went to is in Germany and after spending some time checking the guy there said I could not fit steel wheel's to my Auris Hybrid, I have now bought 15" alloy's with winter tyres fitted, it worked out cheaper then having 17" tyres fitted to my 17" alloy's. So I am now wondering if it is true or not about the steel wheel's, it would be interesting to know if steel wheel's are an option when buying a new Auris Hybrid, when I bought mine in March I had a choice of 15" or 17" alloy's.

Have a feeling I'm being sucked in here but here goes nothing...

A wheel is a wheel is a wheel. Of course you can put a steel wheel on a hybrid. Where on earth do they comes up with these crazy ideas? What difference would it make?

He probably didn't want to go to the trouble of finding wheels with the right pattern and size.

No there is no spare wheel on the Auris Hybrid just a repair kit, besides a space saver wheel is only for an emergency and has a speed restriction, does sound like I have been given crap info by the garage though.

Sorry I didn't mean it to sound like a wind up, I was quite surprised when I was told I couldn't put the steel wheel's on my Auris HSD, the actual difference in price between alloy and steel really wasn't much, the alloy's aren't the Carlos Fandango type, they are only for the winter season, so I'm not sure what the garage had to gain by selling me the alloy over the steel ones unless he just couldn't get the steel and wanted to still make a sale.

That's because it's a different profile to the normal wheels. It's thinner, to save space, that's why they call it a space saver. Has absolutely nothing to do with it being steel. I'd be inclined to avoid that garage...if they mess you about with simple things like wheels, god only knows what they'll do with the rest of the vehicle!

Incidentally, the reason most people who change wheels for winter choose to fit steel ones is that they don't generally suffer as much from the corrosive effects of the road salt they spray about like confetti. Or at least if they are affected, they don't show it so much and don't cost so much to replace!

Well not much I can do now as I have already paid for them, I would have preferred steel wheel's for the exact reason you state, I presume there isn't a weight issue using steel wheel's on a Hybrid? I know it is not possible to toe anything.

Sorry to disagree, but my English Auris has a steel spacesaver spare wheel, can't agree more about your dubious garage though. :o

There is NO steel wheel option for Auris Hybrid, we have plenty of steel wheel options for other models. I doubt it is anything to do with just being a steel wheel, more like there is no type approval for an Auris Hybrid on steel wheels. Garages have a legal responsibility to fit only what is approved, many choose to ignore that, and of course customers can fit what they want, we would only fit the approved option, we live in a letigious world and your dealer is well aware of that fact

Thank you very much:) seems the dealer did know his stuff, I do know that the "Control Technique" (like the MOT in the UK) is very strict and even if steel wheel's were available for the Auris HSD, with no type approval they would have told me to remove them at my expense.

Er, isnt the spacesaver spare made of steel??

4 spacesavers it is then, LOL.

They're thin enough to cut through the snow and imagine the mpg gains on those skinny tyres, cornering might be interesting though. :)

I have also discovered that with my New Verso S T Spirit (with 16 inch alloy wheels)

Toyota do not do a 16inch steel wheel for the Verso S T Spirit.....only a 15 inch for the Verso S TR

The only way for me to get winter tyre/wheel fit is to buy 4 new alloy wheels at £111.0 each plus VAT and then get the 16 inch winter tyres fitted

Do not really want alloys on in the harsh winter!
