Brake Issues With Celica (2001 Vvti 140)

Hi everyone,

I'm a newbie with questions!

My wife and i run a 2001 Celica vvti140 and a Skoda Octavia vRS in sunny (!!) Devon.

The Celica has always had brakes which seem to bind a lot and been into the garage numerous times and had discs / pads replaced but still seems to do it. Bizzarely though it does it when going around a right hand bend, and only on the back axle, passenger side (i think).

I was told by a mechanic at my local Toyota dealership to check the clearance of the heat shields over the discs and gently bend back if necessary. Done this but to no avail.

Any ideas / suggestions would be appreciated as we love the car and want to keep it long term!

Cheers, Nick

Good point Phil, sorry. Not a very clear description!

The binding / metal on metal noise that appears to be coming from the back passenger side brakes seems to happen most when cornering around a right hand bend. It's as if something leans or swings onto the discs........

Did you manage to figure out what was causing the issue? I have the exact same problem - (sounds like the pads gently brushing against the disk). I've had that wheel off more times that I can count! Never found what was causing it, for me it's not the pads or the shoes or the shield behind the disk. There doesn't seem to be anything that can come into contact either! It truly is bizarre. Im sure it is not having a negative effect its just more of an annoyance, stranger still it doesn't do it all the time. Anyway thought I'd let you know you're not alone and if you ever find out what it is please let me know

Hey Tristan,

No we've still not found the cause. To be honest it's been going on for years, and none of the garages we've taken it to can cure it. Like you say it doesn't seem to have a negative effect on the brakes, it's just an annoying noise! My wife solution to the problem is to turn up the stereo!!

Please let me know if you figuire it out and i'll do the same!!

Cheers, Nick

their is two sheilds behind the disk....one you see and the one you can only see when you remove the disk

just remove the disk and look for the polished part and to fix just tap back with a hammer

i have had to sort this fault many times
