Light Cluster

I just noticed on my rav that when i start the engine, or turn the ignition on the little engine warning system light doesn't illuminate. On previous cars this always lit up and gave me a little piece of mind.

So my question is, is this light suppose to light up when turn the key or does it only come on if there is an engine fault? If it is suppose to come on, does anyone have any idea if there is a separate fuse for it or a guide on changing the bulb?

Thanks

Its supposed to come on with the ignition and then stay on for a short while after starting while it runs a check on the engine. Has this worked since you got it? It is not uncommon for oxy sensors to go on the petrols and a favourite old trick to take the bulb out to flog it on.

Probably needs a bulb and don't be surprised if there are skeletons in the cupboard

I really can't remember if it ever came on.. never really thought about it. The oxygen sensor was changed a while back when i got it (have receipts to show the work) do you know where i can find details on fixing it?

If You fixed the sensor Yourself after getting the car then its likely that all will be well if the bulb has been doctored and You now replace it ???....

Sorry i don't understand what you mean! When i brought the car the warning light was on, it was a sensor so it was replaced (had to wait a few days) then the guy replaced the sensor, or at least i hope he did.

What i want to do tomorrow is have a little peek to see what happening (there is also no light to show my fog lights are on) but i don't know how to remove the instrument panel.

I want to do it by the book so i don't cause more harm than good trying to get it out.

Also i know im going off topic but since im here may as way try to fix everything.

Is it normal for gas to escape (sounds like a big woosh/siss of air) when opening the fuel filler cap? When i pull up at the station it sounds like a truck let his air brakes off next to my hand.

Your tank should be vented to prevent this happening .. If the vent is blocked it can in extreme conditions collapse the tank.

Yes that is normal, a bit of pressure and not a vacuum which often caused tanks to collapse on old cars, dont worry about it

Little update, i dissembled the light instrument cluster.. only to find that some lovely chap cover the warning light bulb with blue tack :crybaby:

I drove down the road and it didn't illuminate so i figured everything was ok, until i was stuck in a traffic jam and i lit up like a christmas tree. Mr T wanted £57 to read the fault code which would take 30mins.. I thought that was a total con so went elsewhere, the garage i went too read it in about 2mins and charged £20, which is still ridiculous really but none the less i needed to know the fault code even though i figured it would be an 02 sensor.

He diagnosed it as

p0141 oxygen heater sensor (bank 1 sensor)

p0161 oxygen heater sensor (bank 2 sensor)

Anyone know the cheapest place to get my hands on these? I heard bad things about universal sensors even though you can find then for low as £20 each and would prefer to pay more for the specific one.

edit- forgot to say, thank you very much kingo. That puts my mind at ease at least a little

I agree but a huge amount of pressure as per the description ?

Surely that suggests a vent is blocked or partially blocked ??

Tanks are vented so as to allow fuel to be drawn out without creating a vacuum . The filler caps are sometimes the vent as they have an inbuilt vent .. Most if not all caps are air / liquid tight so fuel cant escape past and fall onto the road. Most tanks I think have a separate vent and if there is a large vacuum taking place as is indicated by Mystics description the that vent needs checking out ASAP. It is rare for a modern tank to collapse but it still can happen and would cost a good heap of money to replace so a check is in order Me thinks !!

charlie, i do run my fuel right down (below the empty mark), maybe that would make it worse? It seems to be higher pressure the longer i leave it to refill the tank, if i open it with a good amount of fuel left then it hardly does it at all.

Mate the less fuel taken or used from the tank the less the size of the vacuum. I don't get any suction or hissing at all from either the Rav or the Jag and cant recall any vacuum related noises from any of the cars and vans I've had in the past years. I did have the problem though with a motorcycle and had to unblock a vent.

From Your description above it seems that is likely that You have a small problem and I would suggest sorting it rather than ignoring it as prevention is better than cure. Of course You could just remove the cap on a regular basis to allow the vacuum to breath and leave it alone..

PS. like Yourself I wait until the light comes on then brim the tank.

Mine acts the same way.

P0141 is Bank 1 Sensor 2 and P0161 B2S2 so it's both of them post cat.

Now then wee charlie

All modern tanks are sealed and do not vent to atmosphere. That is to prevent the release of NOx and other harmful vapours. If you fill your tank after starting in a morning it will not have created the vacuum but it does normally if you fill during a long run. Both of my RAVs and this Soul have done it.

This guy is a crook. If he is a trader, you need to be reporting him and hopefully you will have photographed his nasty work.

Ah Ha What is it they say about a little bit of knowledge ?? Don Motorcycle tanks are definitely vented ! I just assumed that car tanks would be the same ..........

In my handbook it mentions "It is not unusual to hear a slight swoosh when the cap is opened."

It also says"Use only a genuine Toyota fuel tank cap for replacement. It is designed to regulate fuel tank pressure"

You got me all fired up again to go back to him and see what the deal is.

I got the vcar from him on 12/05/11.. Do you think it worth me paying him a visit to see what the idea was behind his actions? I could at least see if i can get the original paperwork (if it exists) to show the works was done on the sensor. Or do think its gone too long?

Del.. Surely there is a difference between a slight swoosh and the description above ?

I have one of those RAC fuelsafe fillers on My car that replaces the original cap. Neither it or the original cap have ever made any noise whatsoever when removing. As above I always fill to the brim and dont remove the cap till its empty .....

The very latest tanks have no cap. They have another arrangement for vapour prevention.

I hear what you are saying and accept it,Wee un.(seems strange writing that as I have to look up to most peeps  )

A thing that comes to mind is that the volume of the sound does vary quite a lot and I expect that the pressure would be more pronounced on a petrol model,as mine is.

Got to agree though I've never heard it as loud as when I used to apply the air brakes on the trucks!
